FEA based analysis for determining structural stability of

proposed support system of 6 Legs for a

Pressure Vessel

7. RELEVANCE:
Pressure vessels are frequently mounted on several support legs located along the
outside circle of the equipment axisymmetrically, which is termed an axisymmetric
support system.
The current range of Pressure Vessels in the market come either in skirt support or
supported by 8 legs equidistance from each other. However, a custom made pressure
vessel has been ordered for the cumene process The custom made vessel has to have a
lot of controls for the cumene process, hence 8 legs are not feasible. Client requires a
feasibility study of 6 or 4 legs and compare the stability of new vessel with previous
Design of 8 legs or skirt support.
In pressure vessels, typically the support given is fully circular chamber made
of steel or R.C.C (there are two options, 8 legs or skirt support, where skirt
support is a fully circular chamber, specify as different types, as right now it is
slightly confusing)
. However for treatment pressure vessels, the process dictates that there should be a
lot of piping below the vessel. To accommodate this piping ,it is not possible to create
a fully circular chamber below the vessel . Instead it is proposed to give support to the
vessel by using steel sections at the dish end the angle of these legs has a significant
effect on the safety of the structure.. If supports are placed at equal angles with
respect to each other, it will ensure maximum stability. The pressure vessel analysis is
to be done for this proposed support system & compare the same with skirt support
system. and with the 8 legs system

8. PRESENT THEORIES AND PRACTICES:

Cai Zengshen, et al [1] in paper” Support leg stress in pressure vessels mounted
on arbitrary legs subjected to lateral loadings”, In the present paper an exact solution
is firstly proposed which is derived from an arbitrary number of legs with the leg
inclined at an arbitrary angle with the horizontal. The solution showed that: (1) in the
general case as to the support systems, the most vulnerable direction of the horizontal
loading which maximizes support leg stress is not in the symmetrical plane of the
system: (2) the most vulnerable direction is independent of the number of the legs in
the system: and (3) it is not the best case for the system that the angle between the
legs and the Horizontal should be 90° by numerical results, when the angle is about

87° the support leg stress level is near to its lowest value.

S.V. Bakre et al [2] in paper “Response of piping system on friction support to

bi-directional excitation” In this paper, seismic effectiveness of friction type support
for a piping system subjected to two horizontal components of earthquake motion is
investigated. The interaction between the mobilized restoring forces of the friction
support is duly considered. The non-linear behavior of the restoring forces of the
support is modeled as an elastic-perfectly plastic system with a very high value of
initial stiffness. Such an idealization avoids keeping track of transitional rules (as
required in conventional modeling of friction systems) under arbitrary dynamic
loading.Put this paper at the end, the paper of skirt support is more relevant to
your project than this paper
Gyeong-Hoi Koo et al [3] in paper “Preliminary structural evaluations of the
STAR-LM reactor vessel and the support design” in this paper design modification
with regards to the thermal barrier is introduced in the STAR-LM design. For a
seismic design, detailed seismic time history response analyses for a reactor vessel
with a consideration of a fluid–structure interaction are carried out for both a top
support type and a bottom support type. And from the results of the hydrodynamic
pressure responses, an investigation of the minimum thickness design of the reactor
vessel is tentatively carried out by using the ASME design rules.
J. Yu et al [4] in paper “Cryostat engineering design and manufacturing
of the EAST superconducting Tokamak” in this paper the EAST device is supported
on a frame, which mainly consists of H-beams in radial and toroidal direction. Sixteen
H-beams in radial direction and 32 H-beams (16 small and 16 large ones) in toroidal
direction are employed. The height from the level of the test hall to the bottom of the
frame is 2000 mm. Three types of design schemes were proposed and calculated by
finite element method. Compared with the results obtained
* EAST cryostat is a large single walled vessel surrounding the entire basic machine
consisting of central cylindrical sectioned two end enclosures, a flat base structure with
external reinforcements and dome-shaped lid structure.
S.Sakurai et al [5] in paper “Design and manufacturing of vacuum vessel for JT-
60SA” he has mentioned in his research work Maximum stress is found near the
basement of baffle plate support legs. He has considered Vacuum vessel of JT-60
Super Advanced (JT-60SA) is composed of 18 port sections with 73 ports for this
special case

Marcos sugaya et al [6] in paper “Predicting the life of skirt supports in pressurized
reactors under cyclic conditions” he mentioned that common problem with skirt
support is the occurrence of cracks originating at the outer boundaries of the welded
junction (Explain where is the weld junction, because in a vessel there are many
weld locations) put this paper at number 2

this series. Put this paper at number 3.

9. OUTLINE OF PROPOSED WORK:

A) Finite Element Analysis:
Finite element analysis of support system of pressure vessel design with skirt support
& leg support (4 legs & 6 legs) will be done with the help of ANSYS software to
determine
Analysis step 01:
To conduct a structural analysis for a pressure vessel with a dish end nozzle,
And determine the stress distribution considering support locations as fixed supports.
Analysis step 02:
Analysis of the support rods using reaction force from first analysis to
determine the dimension of the support.
Analysis 01 & 02 are to be done at operational pressure .
Analysis step 03:
To conduct a structural analysis for the entire assembly.
Analysis 03 is to be done at both operational as well as Hydro Test pressure.
After the analysis , the feasible solution of leg support will be suggested for
the manufacturing.
All design combinations simulated using FEA will not be manufactured.
However at least one of the designs shall be manufactured, assembled & tested for the
operating conditions.

B) EXPERIMENTAL WORK:
In experiment work actual pressure vessel support will be manufactured and similar
operating conditions are applying for getting the test results. At the end testing report
will be submitted for the comparison between FEM Analysis & experimental work.
