First Impressions
Most people make an initial opinion of a stranger within the first five minutes of meeting them. According
to research candidates' impressions are made up of the following:
Body Language and image (70%)
Tone of voice (20%)
What you say (10%)
As soon as you enter the building you need to be polite to everyone you meet. You need to remain calm
and confident, give a firm handshake, and remember to make eye contact. You need to put both yourself
and the interviewer at ease by being down-to-earth whilst remaining business-like, it is often quite a good
idea to have a few conversation openers, especially if the interviewer takes you to the interview room, it
helps break the silence.
Interview Techniques
The interview is not only a chance for the interviewer to assess if you are the right person for the job, but
it is also an opportunity for you to see if the forces are suitable for you.
During the interview you need to look for opportunities to be proactive and ask your own questions or try
to lead the discussion where appropriate. Questions should reflect your keenness to work for the Forces.
Keep your concentration levels up during the interview and make sure you listen to the responses the
interviewer gives you. The worst mistakes happen when people end up asking questions about topics that
have already been covered, or don't hear or understand what the interviewer has said.
Key points:
Make sure you give the interviewer your full attention.
Wait for them to finish speaking, before you answer the question.
Make sure you ask open questions, to ensure you get full answers.
Make sure you understand everything that has been said.
What are your biggest accomplishments? This should be job related, and is a chance to show your
competency.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Points you need to remember:
Smiling is a good positive signal, as it reaffirms your good nature. Don’t give fake smiles.
Maintain eye contact.
Relax do not rush or fidget.
Maintain an alert position, sit up straight, don't slump, but be comfortable.
Always have a confident and honest attitude.

Good and Bad Habits A very important question was asked by someone regarding a very important
question of ISSB. This question is asked in different formats but the answer which they are looking for is
related to your personality.
Questions are: Write 3 good and bad qualities of yourself? Write 3 good qualities of your friend or what do
you like about your friend? (Actually they are your qualities) Write 3 bad qualities of your friend or what is
it that you don’t like in your friend? Which are the three qualities of yours that your friends like? (Your
good qualities) Which are the three qualities of yours that your enemies like? (Your weaknesses) What is
the purpose of these questions? The first purpose is to see if you know about your own self or not, its a
SWOT analysis of yourself (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). If a person knows about
him/her self he can handle any situation and has a better judgment power. The second purpose of these
questions like almost all of the questions at ISSB is to see if you are telling the truth or lies. Since this is a
PET question in ISSB its better to prepare it first. Like always, here again ill tell you to think about yourself
and try to come up with your answers. Because if you write your real weaknesses (bad habits) and good
traits then you would be able to answer exactly the same elsewhere if asked. Here is what you have to
think before answering these important questions... Don’t lie 100%. 20 or 30% is allowed
(Write your good things which are in you and bad which are) Note if you are writing a bad habit it
shouldn’t be that bad which would make a negative impact on selectors e.g. "I lie, I cheat" etc. Don’t try to
be too positive which would clearly show you are lying, e.g. "i am very honest, i never lie" etc. (everyone
lies its human nature) If you are very creative try to portray you negatives in a way as if they appear to be
positive...e.g. "Sometimes in order to keep up with my study schedule i cut my time which i plan to spend
with my family" (This is an example....DO NOT COPY....) Bio Data Form Bio data form is the first thing
you encounter when you go for ISSB. Bio data form is a multi sheet form which requires different personal
information regarding you. This form is very important. This form is with the interviewer on the third day of
I.S.S.B. and he asked questions related to you by reading from that form. This form contains some
general questions which you need to answer. But there are some questions about which most of the
candidates don’t know about, and they face difficulty while filling that form, I' ll jot down some of those
important questions here. CAST and SUB CAST question: One question is related to your CAST, which
means your "Zaat" and its second part is SUB CAST. What Cast means is whether you are "Raja" "Malik"
"Chohadry" etc. and sub cast means "Awan", " Janua", " chandio". For example if there is a candidate
whose name is "Raja Waqar Ali Awan" This means that RAJA is his cast and Awan Sub cast. If any of
you don’t know about your cast and sub cast it’s recommended that you ask your father and prepare the
answer. About your Date of Birth: Another question that is a bit tricky is related to your date of birth, you
are asked to calculate your age to the day you are at ISSB. Meaning how years, months, and days old
may are you today? For instance my date of birth is 6th May 1982 and today its 4 April 2008, how should I
calculate my Age? The answer is simple. Do simple subtraction 4 - 4 - 2008 (minus) 6 - 5 - 1982 gives
you 25 years 10 months 28 days. This is what you have to write over there. About your relatives in Armed
Forces: Another question asked is about your relatives who are in the armed forces of Pakistan. Now
that’s a bit tricky one, that not only ask for names and ranks, they also ask where they are posted now,
and what is their current address, you have to prepare and ask them before going for ISSB what is their
current address so that you are not worried over there and scratching your head A frequent reader of my
blog couple of days ago asked a very important question that previously slipped my mind. The question is
related to the bio data form, This question is about writing some event in your life. The title of the event is
written and you have to write one based on it from your life. The topic can be "write about the most tragic
event of your life" , "write about the unforgettable incident of your life" "the most happiest event of your
life" "the most shocking event of your life" The main purpose of this question is to get to know you better,
to see your emotional level, to see what kind of things you can bear, and how eventful your life has been,
and if the event is life changing, then how has it influenced your life. I would highly recommend you to
prepare all of these topics in a way that they truly are from your real life, and also off course positive.
Tragic event can be the death of some close loved one, unforgettable incident can either be tragic or
happy event, the word "unforgettable" has the meaning that its something that was so startling that you
just cannot forget about it for the rest of your life, so it can be some happy event, like for example you met
someone you take as hero, or you got a chance to be on live TV or something like this. Most shocking as
the title says can be both positive or negative but again positive shock and happy shock is advised. The
reason why am I saying is the event should be from your real life is that they might ask you questions
related to that event, especially the interviewer if he finds it interesting or has the suspicion that its a made
up fake event, if it’s such an unforgettable event and it really happened then you might give a hint of it in
any of the psychological tests, that’s natural. You can only defend it if it actually happened, it can’t be a
mega event, it can be a simple event, like getting first position in 7th grade, or getting something really
interesting as winning a debating competition in your school or college, anything that is appealing and real
can be written. Often candidates are asked a simple question during interview, "why do you want to join
army/navy/air force?" Guys always get confused and give silly replies like "Sir: To serve my nation" or "I
have a passion to join armed forces.” Although these answers might be your true motives for joining the
armed forces and are very noble, but these answers are not appropriate when it comes to ISSB. You
have to give a bit more mature and logical answer. Because these questions can result in counter
questions like you can serve the nation many other ways...... or you have good marks you can become an
engineer and serve the nation...etc the rule of all the answers should be "give clear and complete
answers which would satisfy all his queries." Here are some of the answers which would be more
appropriate: * Sir, it’s a good career, with a lot of grace, it can give me great opportunities to rise in ranks
based on my abilities, it is a respectable profession, * Sir, it’s a dynamic job with lots of field work, not a
desk job where you spend rest of your life. In other words it’s an exciting job, which would polish my
abilities and help me learn alot. My answer was * "Sir i read a book about Air force "pak fizaya ke dastan
e shujaat" which had the complete story of the Halwara Mission of Sarfarz Rafique Shaeed, he is my
inspiration for whom I am joining air force." (Note: These examples are just to give you an idea, its highly
discouraged that you use them as they are, as your answers, try to think of your answers in the same
lines as these...Be original)
An interview is a face-to-face meeting, especially for the purposed of assessing the candidate for the job
applied for. It aims at evaluating your academic knowledge, awareness or current topics, communication
skills, the clarity of thought and expression and sense of balance, and ability to extricate you from tricky
situation. ISSB's: One of the most fundamental factors that contribute to the successful interview is the
time and quality of preparation made by. Normally the President/ Vice President of the Services Selection
Board will conduct the personal Interview. They are very senior Officer from the Armed forces. Degree of
preparedness for an interview helps reduce the uncertain anxiety prior to the Interview.. The amount of
effort you wish to put into preparation is directly proportional to your output at the interview. How to plan
your preparation? Preparation develops Confidence and gears you for the anticipated grilling. Prepare the
following: How to Tackle? Write down in a neat and legible handwriting the PIQ form given to you (Please
copy it down it is given in this CD). Try to put down everything in an orderly and crisp manner. Revise
your Bio-data thoroughly. Try to form your own questions based on it. Answer them to your full
satisfaction. Check your Bio-Date for grammatical and spelling error. Remember discerning interviewer
expects Zero error in the Bio-Data. Try and collect as much information about the City in which you live,
your School, College, place of interview and places you have visited. Be sure regarding your hobbies. For
example, if you have written reading as a hobby, be sure about what you have been reading. Interviewer
expects a serious reply. He expects the names of the authors and then will ask questions based on their
themes. A serious reader will score over others who refer cheap detective, thriller novels. The logic holds
good for any other hobby you have mentioned in your PIQ. Be clear of your favorite subject and area of
you interest in the subject, which you are/have specialized. Refresh your knowledge. Then interviewer
might ask you a few technical questions. A well-groomed look gives an image of thoroughness and
professional look. Your achievements should be brought out in a systematic order as and when you are
asked about it. Follow the normal etiquette for the interview. Wait for the officer to speak first- Listen
carefully before you speak. Take a few long breaths this will calm down your nerves, after listening to the
question carefully, clarify your doubts if any, before you answer the question. Think well before you
answer. For more questions will follow your answers. The New Technique adopted at the SSB Interview
is RAPID FIRE questions. Listen to the questions carefully. Think well before you answer, elaborate your
answers and tactfully take him on to your strong points. Do not over emphasize them. Be very clear in
your thought and expression. Don't speak in a low voice; be loud enough so that interviewer doesn’t have
to strain their ears. Be brief, brevity is the hallmark of a good communicator. Answer all the questions in a
sequence. If you don't know an answer then be Honest. The Interviewer will respect integrity and honesty.
NEVER Exaggerate. Never boast about anything including your achievements. Never enter into an
argument with the interviewer on any topic.
If offered a Handshake, do so, if not just say, "Thank you for the wonderful evening and put the chair back
to its original position before leaving. Leave the place with a warm smile and a nod of head. Close the
door gently and leave the room.
Your Appearance:
Appearance makes the man. You should dress up for the occasion. Most of the time you will be asked to
attend the Interview in the PT. Kit it is better for you to keep a small pocket Comb and a neat and clean
Handkerchief. Freshen up yourself before you set foot in the interviewer’s room. Your warm smile,
excellent etiquette and a firm handshake will be starting point. As we have brought out earlier, RAPID Fire
questions are the order of the. It means you will be asked to answer a number of questions after listening
to them just once. Please listen to the question carefully. If you have not understood the question then
ask for the clarification. Try and answer the questions in the same sequence as put forth to you. Since the
distance between you and the interviewing officer would be about 6 feet, you are expected to talk in a
loud and clear voice. Take your time think and answer questions. DO NOT TELL A LIE. You will be
caught.
Interviewing Officers are usually hold the Rank of Colonel or its equivalent rank in the Navy/Air Force.
Here are some of the tips which you will find it useful while facing the Interviewing officer:
a) Be tidy and well dressed. Wear simple clothes but with fitting. Do not wear Jewelry b)On entering the
room wish the panel and do what they say. c) Do not get over anxious. A minor degree of nervousness is
expected from everyone. d) Be yourself e) Be polite and use words like "Please", "Sir", Do not sound
egoistic. f) Be natural and never convey extravagant ideas like " I would die for my country" or " The best
profession is the Defense Forces ". g) Do not lie or beat around the bush. If you are not sure of their
answer say that you do not know. You are not going to be penalized for say it. h) Be brief, loud and clear.
i) The major questions like Why do you want to join the Army/Navy/Air Force?. There is no perfect answer
to this question. While answering it try to convey 4 or 5 facts such as: i. Defense services offers a
Challenge to a young person ii. Merit is given due recognition in te Forces. iii. I will get an opportunity to
learn and experience the latest technological inventions. iv. I like an outdoor life rather than a 10 to 5 desk

should be free and frank enough to interact with the interviewer. The interviewer may ask questions
relating to the candidate’s exposure to different environment i.e. self, family affairs, educational
background etc. He/she may be asked to analyze or interpret some of the national/international issues
and hypothetical situations. Candidates are expected to be sincere and honest in their interview and must

confident • Panel normally consists of 05members • Say Assalam-O-Alaikum • When anyone say please
have a seat then you sit on the chair with thanks otherwise standup till getting permission. • Put your hand
bag down with your chair’s right or left side leg; don’t use table for this purpose. • Make use of full chair
and put your hands on arms of chair • Try to avoid in defending position(means crossing of hand on each

achievements also. Fully know what does your father, brothers and sisters do, and introduction will make
a powerful impression on their minds. • You must know meaning of your name, your caste history etc. • I
do believe that you have photocopied that filled form which you have submitted because they will ask
some questions from it, so take a look on it that which things you have written on it.. • Then some
questions will be asked regarding accounts by a member who is specialist in your subject • prepare
mathematical questions. e.g. if price of dozen eggs are Rs.26 what is the price of 03 eggs? What is 05 %
of 200. etc. • General knowledge e.g. capital of Sweden, president of India, which countries are included
in far east, Bhat currency is of which country etc means simple questions..say simply sorry which you

definitely question will be asked, so make solid reasons for low grades. • look into the eyes of that panel
member who put forward a question to you. And answer his/her question in that language in which he
asked..Don’t roll ur eyes/cut your tongue/fingers bending/lips sucking/lifting of feet. All these are the signs
of tensions. So try to avoid, you can do mirror practice at home. • don’t speak against Government/Armed
Forces if he asks something about it. Avoid any rudeness or anger.
