LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Mathematics 5 - Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

I. Introduction
Fractions are part of our daily activities. You may not notice it, but after going
through this Learning Activity you will realize that people always encounter
fractions.

This Learning Activity sheet, will help you understand and appreciate the
concept of adding and subtracting fractions using different strategies.

II. Learning Competency

This Learning Activity Sheets was designed and written with you in mind. It
is here to help you how to add and subtract fractions and mixed fractions
without or with regrouping (M5NS-le-84)

III. Objectives
After going through this Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:

1.add and subtract fractions and mixed fractions without or

with regrouping;
2. write the sum and difference of a given fractions; and
3. work quickly and accurately.

1
IV.Discussion
Problem: 1
3 1
Mother bought 4 kilograms of pork and 12 kilograms chicken.
4
Together, how much pork and chicken did mother buy?

How do you solve the problem?

Follow the steps:

Step 1. Arrange the mixed numbers vertically

Step 2: Since the fractions are not similar change
them to similar fractions by finding the Least
Common Denominator. Remember that the LCD
is the LCM of the denominators

Solution:
3 3
4 4 = 44
1 2
12 = 14
5 4 1 1 1
54 = 5 + + 4 = 5 + 1 + 4 = 6 4 𝑘𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚
4
1
Answer: Mother bought 6 4 kilogram of pork and chicken

3 1 3 4
Another Example: 48 + = LCD = 8 48 + = 4 7/8
2 8

Problem 2
2 2
Aljur took 4 5 minutes to do a Math problem. Sean took 5 3 minutes to
do it. How much longer did it take Sean to solve the problem than Aljur?

To solve the problem, we need to know.

What is asked?

How much longer did it take Sean to solve the problem than Aljur?

2
𝟐 𝟐
What is given? 𝟒 𝟓 minutes and 𝟓 𝟑 minutes

How do we solve the problem? You subtract.

2 10
5 3 = 5 15

2 6
4 5 = 4 15
_ 4
1
15

4
It took Sean 1 15 minutes longer to solve the problem

Another Example:
6 1
12 9
− 3
= LCD=9

6 6
12 9
= 9
9÷9=1x6
=6

1 3
− 3
= 9
9÷3=1x3

3 3
12 9
÷ 3
= 12 1/3

Problem 3:

2 3
Janine’s crayon is 53 centimeter long and while Jasmin’s crayon is 24
centimeter long. How much longer is Janine’s crayon than that of Jasmin?

To solve the problem.

2 3
Rename 53 and 24 as similar fraction

Find the LCM of 3 and 4,12 is the LCM

Use 12 as LCD
9 8
Since the fractional part is greater than
12 12

2 8 12 8 20
53 = 512 4 + 12 + 12 = 4 12

3
3 9 9
24 = 212 212
11
Subtract the fractions, then the whole number: 212

11
Janine’s crayon’s is longer by 212 centimeter.

3 2
Another Example: 129 − 3

3 2 3 6
129 − = 129 − 9
3

9 3 12 6 6
= 119 + 9 = 11 − 9 = 11 9
9

6 3 2
Change: 119 ÷ 3 = 11 3 in lowest term
