Belen and “Passion and Revolution” by Reynaldo Ileto are both very significant and
important poems that depict key roles in Philippine History . They both are written by
significant figures and they both hold great meaning but aside from both being cherished as
important historical poems and having the word “pasyon” in their titles, these poems are very
different. These both have very messages and stories behind their creation. Reynaldo
perception of "the masses" by using the religious performance of the suffering and death of
Christ, the pasyon, as source material. The “Mahal na Passion ni Jesu Christong Panginoon
Natin na Tola” by Gaspar however , had different intentions and acted instead as a a
Philippine epic narrative of the life of Jesus Christ, focused on his Passion, Death, and
Resurrection.. Ileto’s passion attests to indigenous or the folk consciousness through the way
he talks about thelife of Christ in the form of an epic. The epic cucles with calling, dealing
with trials, negotiations, successes and all of these depict the passion- tself. It depicts the Life
of Christ with in all it’s glaring. It highlights the suffering, cruxifiction, death and
resurrection. Folk consciousness can be seen from these two poems as deriving from a form
of adaption , present in the revolution in 1896 as Katipuneros regularly meet and read the
Passion in order to adapt better. It also presented Jesus against powers of greed, making the
readers of the Passion desire to be liberated and be victorious over the rulers against spain. It
later also became adapted after Most of those who participated in the revolution of 1896, in
particular Bonifacio's group, the celebratory group, were part of this tradition of adapting
