JOB DESCRIPTION: Full-Time Research Assistant to Professor Amanda Kowalski

Positions are available at the University of Michigan starting in Summer 2021. Strong preference will
be given to applicants who have potential to work for two years. Given the covid-19 pandemic, virtual
work options that involve regular hours in the Eastern time zone will be available in the first year.

Successful candidates will collaborate closely with a research team on projects in the fields of health
economics and applied econometrics. Current research focuses on combining randomized experiments
with theoretical models to target health interventions to individuals most likely to benefit from them. For
examples of previous research and related press coverage, see https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/amanda-
kowalski/. Research assistants are involved in all stages of the research process and are expected to work
independently within the scope of their responsibilities. Duties include, but are not limited to,
collaborating on research design, conducting data analysis, interpreting results, training other research
assistants, and drafting and editing manuscripts and presentations. Research assistants interact directly
with Professor Amanda Kowalski, her co-authors, and other research assistants on a regular basis.

Candidates should have a long-term interest in pursuing research related to economics. Prior background
in health economics or public finance is useful but not necessary. This position is ideal for candidates
looking to develop their empirical research skills in preparation for applying to PhD programs in
economics. For continuing education, research assistants have opportunities to attend weekly seminars in
economics and to get feedback on their proposed research ideas. Previous research assistants have
enrolled in top economics and health policy PhD programs.

Preference will be given to detail-oriented applicants with previous programming experience, particularly
in working with large datasets in software such as Stata, SAS, R, or Matlab.

Salary will be competitive with other research assistant positions.

TO APPLY: Please email Amanda Kowalski [email protected] and Srajal Nayak [email protected] a

event that all positions have been filled, so there is no need to inquire if positions are still available.
