Grammar Lesson: Present Forms

Present forms involves the following grammatical expression: Simple Present (Present tense of be), Present
Continuous, Present Perfect, and Present Perfect Continuous.

Simple Present:
Simple present is used to express habitual actions, routines, facts, and in some specific scenarios (future
arrangements)

Statement Structure
Positive Statement S+V+C
She plays soccer every day in the afternoon

Negative Statement S + Aux + not + V bf + C


She does not play soccer every day in the afternoon

Yes/No Questions Aux + S + V bf + C +? – Yes, S + Aux / No, S + Aux + not

V = Verb – There are 2 types of conjugation


1 – S (I – you – we - they) + V – The verb should be in base form
2 – S (She – He - It) + V – The verb should be in third person singular conjugation

Person singular conjugation


1 – To the majority of the verbs in base form add an (-s) at the end.
She plays soccer.
My brother works in a bank.

2 – Add a (-es) at the end of base form verbs ending in (-s) (-sh) (-ch) (-o) (-x)

3 – If the base form verb ends in the conventions – consonant + y, it is necessary to erase the “y” and add

They are grammatical expressions used to express an action that started in the past, and continues up to
the present.

Present Perfect Progressive


Definition: It is commonly used to express actions that started in the past, they are in progress in the
present and probably will continue in the future.

Positive Statement S + have/has + been + V present participle + C
I have been working on a very difficult project.

Negative Statement S + have/has + not + been + V present participle + C


She has been playing on that team for years

Yes/No Questions Has/have + S + been + V p.p. + C +? – Yes, S + V be / No, S + V be + not

You have been eating in my room because I can smell a hamburger.


1 – The sentences makes reference to an experience that didn’t happened. Present Perfect should be used.

Your letter must be between 180 – 220 words
Prepositional Phrase:
A prepositional phrase is a group of words that contains a preposition at the beginning, fallowed usually by
a noun or a noun phrase.

Preposition + (Noun/Noun Phrase) object of a preposition


Depends on the time we spend together.

In = used in area and periods of time and space, it is also used to indicate that something is inside a body.

On = used in streets, avenues, dates, days. It is used to indicate that something is on a surface.

At = at is used to indicate specific points in space or time.

Grammar: Adjectives and Adverbs of Comparison

Adjective: It is a word used to describe, modify and qualify a noun.


My little sister has a pretty young puppy.

Pretty young – puppy
Restrictive adjective – because it provides important information about the noun.
Nonrestrictive adjective – because they provide extra information to the sentence.

Comparative Adjectives: A comparative adjective is a word that we use to describe how different or how
equal are two nouns.

The Superlative Form

place to be in their gardens with the family, in my opinion the best place to be is in my room because I can
have fun, be comfortable and have privasiti.

first of all in my room I can get entertained and distracted because I can play video games or watch movies
on Netflix on my TV, Another reason is that in my bedroom I feel more comfortable because in my bed I
have my bed where I can lie down without being disturbed or I can be doing whatever I want without
anyone saying anything to me. and finally in my room I have privacy because I can be doing strange things
like trying clothes or doing my homework without anyone bothering me or seeing me do things.

In conclusion, my room is my favorite place to be because I can have fun, be comfortable and have privacy.
Next time you are looking for a place to feel comfortable go to your room.

Definition: It is commonly used to express actions that started in the past, continued under certain period
of time and we want to emphasize this period in specific.

I had been working in TOTAL for almost 20 years before I got retired from my position.

Which of these types of holidays do you find most appealing?

In my opinion, I find most appealing a cruise as a holiday. The first reason why I’d choose a cruise is
because I love the sea, since I was a child I dreamed to have a life in the sea. The second reason is that
cruises are filled with luxurious amenities that I really enjoy, for example Buffets, saunas, swimming, spas,
etc. And the final reason why I chose the cruise is because it is an unforgettable experience that lasts
forever, I had the opportunity to go on a cruise when I was 22 years and that memory remains until today.
