Prufrock was indecisive and having a hard time doing some
action. Most of his life had been procrastination. He was self-
conscious and always thinks of others’ opinions about him.
Also, he can’t let go of his imperfections

The poem ends with a metaphor for Prufrock’s life. The
mermaids that represent all of life’s opportunities, will pass
Prufrock by as he stands on the shore as a passive observer until
death.
