ASSIGNMENT 1 FOR CHEM OF NATURAL PRODUCTS

1. WHAT IS NATURAL PRODUCTS CHEMISTRY AND WHY IS IT

IMPORTANT?

It is important to provide a more comprehensive understanding

of the molecules present in human cells and tissues, the regulation

of these molecules, and their interactions with related proteins. A

crucial approach toward this more thorough understanding of

human disease is to identify novel molecular methods for analysing

the biological macromolecules associated with them. The study of

natural products provides an exemplary technique for the detection

of new biological probes for a variety of diseases. Natural

ingredients have traditionally played an important role in the

production of prescription medicines for a range of disorders,

including cancer and infections. Natural products, however, also

have the ability to recognize novel agents for other complex CNS

conditions, such as anxiety, chronic pain , depression, and

schizophrenia. Unfortunately, considering their attractive potency

and selectivity, it is generally uncommon for natural products to

have sufficiently attractive absorption, temperament, metabolism

and excretion properties.

Natural product study includes the exploration of biodiversity for

the discovery of novel drug lead, isolation and structural

determination of organic natural products of medicinal value from

plants and microbes, studies of biological product structure and

biochemistry, analysis of natural product biosynthesis, and

assessment of the biochemical effects of these active products In

addition, semi- or absolute synthetic chemistry is also sought for

pharmacologically active natural products.

2. WHAT ARE THE CLASSES OF NATURAL PRODUCTS?

Four of the major classes of natural products are the alkaloids,

which are organic molecules that contain nitogen, the

phenylpropanoids which are derived from the amino acids

phenylalanine or tyrosine, the polyketides derived from acetate

and malonate, and the terpenoids, derived from the five-carbon

building block, isoprene.

3. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF NATURAL PRODUCTS IN DRUG

DISCOVERY?

Natural products have been serving as a source of medicinal agents

for several years and have shown beneficial uses. Only the

discovery of natural drug products plays an important role in

establishing the scientific evidence for these natural resources. Drug

discovery research needs to establish robust and viable lead

molecules that, through structural elucidation and structure

recognition through GC-MS, NMR, IR, HPLC, and HPTLC, move

forward from a screening hit to a drug candidate. The advancement

of emerging technology has revolutionized the discovery of new

drugs through the screening of natural products. Using these

technologies offers us an opportunity to conduct research using

software and a database to screen new molecules to create natural

products as a major source of drug discovery. It ultimately leads to

the discovery of a structure. Powerful new technologies are

revolutionizing the exploration of natural herbal drugs.

4. GIVE 3 EXAMPLES OF NATURAL PRODUCTS AND THEIR USES

IN MEDICINE.

1. An important example is the analgesic activity of aspirin,

which is so far the world’s best known and most universally

used medicinal agent. Its origin is from the plant genera Salix

spp. and Populus spp. and it is related to salicin.

2. Serendipitous discovery of the antibiotic penicillin in the

laboratory from the fungus Penicillium notatum.

3. Paclitaxel, which was first isolated from the bark of the Pacific

yew tree Taxus brevifolia (Taxaceae), is the most recent

example of an important natural product that has made an

impact in medicine. Activity against a variety of retroviruses,

including HIV, two compounds isolated from Hypericum

perforatum (Guttiferae) are hypericin and pseudohypericin.

They are of paramount importance due to inhibition of release

of reverse transcriptase by stabilizing the structure of the HIV

capsid and thus preventing the uncoating process.
