Material:

The substance used to make something is called a material.

Example - A school desk is made from wood, plastic, or metal—or a mixture


of all three materials.

A chair is made from wood or plastic or metals or combination of all three.

Here wood, plastic, metal are example of material.

Materials from living things:

Wood and paper from tree

Leather from animal skin

Cotton from plants

Wool from sheep

Materials from Nonliving Things

All metals like iron, gold, silver, diamond

Chalk, clay, coal, and sand

Properties of Materials:

Materials may be soft, hard, flexible (bendable), rigid (stiff), transparent (see-
through), opaque (meaning light does not shine through it), rough, smooth,
shiny, or dull.

Soft/Hard: Metals are hard. Cotton and sponge are soft.

Flexible/Rigid: Flexible material can bend easily without breaking.


Rigid material does not bend.

Shiny/Dull: Metals have shine or lustre. Ex- Iron, copper, aluminum,

Soluble and Insoluble

Some substances completely disappear or dissolve in water. These


substances are soluble in water.

Example: Sugar, Salt

Some substances do not mix with water and do not disappear. These
substances are insoluble in water.

Example: Oil, Petrol, Sand
