1. TABLETS - The most common form of drugs available in the market. They
are easy to consume by the patient and can be swallowed with a glass of
water. They come in different shapes and types.
EXAMPLE: Paracetamol, Multivitamins
2. CAPSULES - Similar with tablet these type of drug is also easy to
administer. It is coated with gelatin shells. The advantage is they can
include liquid from of drug and also incompatible formulations in their shells.
EXAMPLE: Cephalexin, Amoxicillin
3. CHEWABLE TABLETS - These are similar to tablets in appearance but they
are large in size with attractive color, odor and sweet taste. They are meant
to be chewed in the mouth for the drug to release and show its effects.
EXAMPLE: Antacid tablets (gaviscon), Vitamin C
4. POWDERS - These are solid dosage forms and are in powder format. They
are used for dusting and external applications like on wounds, cuts, skin
infection etc.
EXAMPLES: Salicylic acid-5g, Nystop (topical powder)
5. SOLUTIONS - The type of drug that are dissolved in a suitable solvent.
These solutions are clear liquids bu can have color, taste and also
acceptable odor.
EXAMPLES: Oral syrups, Vising (eye drops) , Otosol (ear drops) or nasal
drops.
6. EMULSIONS - It is the dispersion of a liquid in another liquid. Must be
shaken vigorously before usage since they separate into layers after
standing a long period of time
EXAMPLES: purified vegetable oil (for IV), castor oil, liquid paraffin
7. SUSPENSIONS - Liquid formulations of drugs but they have a fine solid
particles in an aqueous solution. Hence they have a label “SHAKE WELL
BEFORE USE.” This helps the settled cream to disperse for uniform dosing
of drug.
EXAMPLES: sulfamethoxazole suspension, hydrocortisone suspension,
Procaine penicilin G insulin Zinc Suspension,
8. OINTMENTS - They can be solutions, suspensions or even emulsions but
have high viscosity. used for application on skin or mucous membrane it is
also oil based.
EXAMPLES: Trimycin, Bactroban (mupicorin)
9. EFFERVESCENT - granular effervescent salts and/or other materials that
release gas. This when swallowed removes any gas from the stomach and
helps in relieving gastric acidity
EXAMPLES:Ural Effervescent Granules, Tradol, berroca
10. SUPPOSITORIES - These are solid dosage forms which are intended for
insertion in the anus. shape like a cylinder or cone which melts gradually in
body temperature
EXAMPLES: Dulcolax Suppositories, Rhea Glycerin
