Art history is the academic study of the history and development of the visual arts. And
art appreciation, the application basic tools of visual literacy in order to understand and
appreciate works of art. Basically art appreciation is evaluating the meaning of an art
just by the way it was created but in art history it will analyze deeper meaning into the
art like looking at it with a broader context. The nature of art’s preliminary expression
differs on what prior knowledge we have. Others may view an art as beautiful but there
are some who can evaluate deeper meaning and can give historical context.
2. Choose one definition of Art from the lesson and give your personal interpretation
a. Art is universal
Art is universal because art goes beyond culture and language. It has no limits and it
will outlive every one of us. Art is everywhere; wherever men have lived together. It has
sprung up among them as a language charged with feelings and significance. Art as a
cultural force can be pervasive and potent. It has no limit and rises above cultures,
races and civilization.
This may simply be answered by citing that art is artificial. Art is man-made construct.
Moreover, “art is not nature” means that it is not a natural occurrence. However, man
has taught himself to find art in nature.
An artist gains experience while doing the creative project, therefore each project
requires a certain amount of experience and as the creative process evolves into the
Artist's personal style, experience is the factor that provides nuance, balance,
perspectives and depth, also the ability to discern the desired quality of the work. If you
desire as an artist to be as accurate as possible in depicting a scene on paper or
canvas, you need the experience of your skill set to apply your medium to the material
in order to complete the idea as you envisioned it. Experience also provides the
sensation of repeatability in your works so as to maintain your artistic persona.

Assignment: Go to You Tube-Five 16 Film Festival Art Appreciation. After watching the
short video, make your personal impression on how this presentation is related to our
discussion.
What I get from the film presentation is that although art is universal there are some
people who choose to see art as confusing and easy. It’s really hard trying to get to
know the value of art if you see it as a mess. The guy goes around uninterested while
the girl is trying hard to explain the value of art. It is said in the video that art is not
meant to be taken literally, so if you’re going into an art exhibition you must have an
open mind and open every possibilities for interpretation. So how does this short film
relates to this subject, this just goes to show that art appreciation is how we learn about
the complexity of an artist and sometime no matter how we at art we can never fully
attain its meaning that is why it is up to us to interpret it in our own way and this subject
teaches that.
