The following table documents the power consumption characteristics of the product.
The power consumption levels listed in the previous table represent time-averaged measurements.
Instantaneous power draws may be substantially higher than the average.
Sleep Mode
This product is designed with an energy-saving mode called the Sleep Mode. The Sleep Mode saves energy by
lowering power consumption during extended periods of inactivity. The Sleep Mode is automatically engaged
after this product is not used for a specified period of time, called the Sleep Mode Timeout.
Factory default Sleep Mode Timeout for this product (in minutes): 60
By using the configuration menus, the Sleep Mode Timeout can be modified between 1 minute and 240 minutes.
Setting the Sleep Mode Timeout to a low value reduces energy consumption, but may increase the response
time of the product. Setting the Sleep Mode Timeout to a high value maintains a fast response, but uses more
energy.
Off mode
If this product has an off mode which still consumes a small amount of power, then to completely stop product
power consumption, disconnect the power supply cord from the wall outlet.

Paper characteristics
Next
The following paper characteristics affect print quality and reliability. Consider these characteristics when
evaluating new paper stock.
Go Back
• Weight—The printer can automatically feed paper weights from 60 to 176 g/m2 (16 to 47 lb bond) grain
long. Paper lighter than 75 g/m2 (20 lb) might not be stiff enough to feed properly, causing jams. For best
performance, use 80 g/m2 (21 lb bond) grain long paper. For paper smaller than 182 x 257 mm
(7.2 x 10.1 in.), we recommend 90 g/m2 or heavier paper.
• Curl—Curl is the tendency for paper to curl at its edges. Excessive curl can cause paper feeding problems.
Curl can occur after the paper passes through the printer, where it is exposed to high temperatures.
Storing paper unwrapped in hot, humid, cold, or dry conditions, even in the trays, can contribute to paper
curling prior to printing and can cause feeding problems.
• Smoothness—Paper smoothness directly affects print quality. If paper is too rough, the ink cannot print on
it properly. If paper is too smooth, it can cause paper feeding or print quality issues.
• Moisture content—The amount of moisture in paper affects both print quality and the ability of the printer to
feed the paper correctly. Leave paper in its original wrapper until it is time to use it. This limits the exposure
of paper to moisture changes that can degrade its performance. Condition paper before printing by storing
it in its original wrapper in the same environment as the printer for 24 to48 hours before printing. Extend
the time several days if the storage or transportation environment is very different from the printer
environment. Thick paper may also require a longer conditioning period.
• Grain direction—Grain refers to the alignment of the paper fibers in a sheet of paper. Grain is either grain
long, running the length of the paper, or grain short, running the width of the paper. For 60 to 176 g/m2
(16 to 47 lb bond) paper, use grain long fibers.
• Fiber content—Most high-quality xerographic paper is made from 100% chemically treated pulped wood.
This content provides the paper with a high degree of stability resulting in fewer paper feeding problems
and better print quality. Paper containing fibers such as cotton possesses characteristics that can
negatively affect paper handling.
Unacceptable paper
The following paper types are not recommended for use with the printer:
Selecting paper
Using the appropriate paper prevents jams and helps ensures trouble-free printing. To help avoid jams and poor
print quality:
Preprinted papers such as letterhead must be able to withstand temperatures up to 200°C (392°F) without
melting or releasing hazardous emissions.
Storing paper
Use these paper storage guidelines to help avoid jams and uneven print quality:
• For best results, store paper where the temperature is 21°C (70°F) and the relative humidity is 40%. Most
label manufacturers recommend printing in a temperature range of 18 to 24°C (65 to 75°F) with relative
humidity between 40 and 60%.
• Store paper in cartons when possible, on a pallet or shelf, rather than on the floor.
• Store individual packages on a flat surface.
• Do not store anything on top of individual paper packages.
As an environmentally conscious company, Lexmark supports the use of recycled office paper. In 1998,
Lexmark presented to the US government a study demonstrating that recycled paper produced by major mills in
the US fed as well as non-recycled paper. However, no blanket statement can be made that all recycled paper
will feed well. Lexmark consistently tests its printers with recycled paper (20–100% post-consumer waste) and a
variety of test paper from around the world, using chamber tests for different temperature and humidity
conditions. Lexmark has found no reason to discourage the use of today's recycled office papers, but generally
the following property guidelines apply to recycled paper.
Recycled paper, paper of lower weight (<60 g/m2 [16 lb bond]) and/or lower caliper (<3.8 mils [0.1 mm]), and
paper that is cut grain-short for portrait (or short-edge) fed printers may have lower bending resistance than is
required for reliable paper feeding. Before using these types of paper for inkjet printing, consult your paper
supplier. Remember that these are general guidelines only and that paper meeting these guidelines may still
cause paper feeding problems in any inkjet printer (for example, if the paper curls excessively under normal
printing conditions).

electronic board or assembly for personal safety and to prevent damage to the printer.
Disconnect any connections between the printer and PCs/peripherals.
The diagnostic information in this chapter leads you to the failing part. Before you replace an entire assembly,
determine if just the defective part is available in the parts catalog. Use the error code tables, symptom table,
service checks, and the Diagnostic aids chapter to determine the symptom and repair the failure. The removal
procedures in the Repair information chapter may help you identify parts. After you complete the repair, perform
the appropriate tests to verify the repair.
Initial check
Installation environment
• The power supply line voltage is plus or minus 10% of the rated line voltage.
• The machine is securely installed on a level surface in a well-ventilated place.
• The room temperature is between 10 and 32°C (50 and 90°F) and the relative humidity between 20 and
80%.
• Avoid sites generating ammonia gas, high temperature, high humidity (near water faucets, kettles,
humidifiers), cold spaces, near open flames, and dusty areas.
• Avoid sites exposed to direct sunlight.

Power-On Self Test (POST) sequence
Plug the printer into an electrical outlet. The printer comes on automatically.
If any of these fail to occur, remove and reinstall the ink cartridges, and then repeat POST. If the POST remains
incomplete, then see “Troubleshooting table” on page 2-2. Find the symptom, and take corrective action.

Note: These symptoms may require replacement of one or more CRUs (Customer Replaceable Units)
designated as supplies or maintenance items, which are the responsibility of the customer.
Service tip: Before troubleshooting any print quality problems, do the following: Next
1. Print a menu settings page, and then check the life status of all supplies. Any supplies that are low should
be replaced.
Note: Be sure and keep the original menu page to restore the customer's custom settings if needed. Go Back
2. On the menu page, make sure that everything is set to the default level.
3. Check the ink cartridges, and install new cartridges if necessary.
4. If paper other than 20 lb plain letter/A4 paper is being used; load 20 lb plain letter/A4, and print the Print
Test Page to see if the problem remains.
5. Use Tray 1 to test print quality problems.
6. Print the Print Test Page, and then look for variations in the print from what is expected.
An incorrect printer driver for the installed software can cause problems. Incorrect characters could print, and
the copy may not fit the page correctly.

Theory of operation
Engine
Function Next
In order for an image to be printed, the media has to be moved from an input source (such as a tray) into the
print zone and eventually exit into an output bin. The engine uses rollers to move and deskew the media, and Go Back
sensors for timing.
The most important component in this process is the media itself. Old, damaged, or out-of-specification media
can and will cause feed and transport problems. If you encounter problems, always check the media first. See
“Media guidelines” on page 1-27. In addition, it is always good practice to check the printer and driver settings
to see if the media being used matches the user’s settings. It is not uncommon to find a user printing on card
stock with the printer programmed to print on a plain paper setting.
The printer’s feed and transport components can fail and cause paper jams or other feed and transport
problems. These components should be examined for damage or wear and replaced if necessary.
The printer has a C-shaped paper path (see the picture below). The paper paths are shown in red. Media is fed
from the front of the printer from the input tray, and travels upward along the rear side of the printer.
Note: There is a duplex unit (not shown) in this printer. The duplex unit is attached to the rear of the printer.
Duplexing is described later.

• Feed roll
• Pressure roller arms (PRA)
• Exit rollers
• Output bin
• Duplex rollers (D1 and D2)
• Staging sensor
• End-of-Form (EOF) sensor
Operation
Simplex
The media is fed from the input tray by the ACM. The media moves forward, and is fed between the nip of
the first feed assist rollers (A1) and continues until the media hits the staging sensor. For the first pick, the
pick system reverses, and A1 feeds the paper through A2, and both feed assist rollers move the media
forward to the feed roll. Then the media triggers the EOF sensor before it reaches the feed roller. Once the
leading edge of the paper has triggered the EOF sensor, the assist rollers continue feeding forward while
the feed roller turns in reverse direction for a few milliseconds to deskew the media. The feed roller then
moves the media forward to the print zone. For succeeding pages of plain paper, deskewing is performed
by the first assist roller (A1) pushing the media against the second assist roller (A2) for a certain distance.
Then the media is fed through the feed roll without another deskew.
When the media reaches the print zone, the printer starts to print. The feed roller indexes the paper from
one print position to another, as needed for the print job.
After printing has completed, the media exits through the exit rollers, and lands in the output bin. On
multipage jobs, once the trailing edge of the media passes a certain position relative to the EOF sensor,
the printer may pick the next sheet.
Duplex Previous
Printers with duplex support use a secondary paper path to print on the second side of a sheet of media.
The following steps summarize the duplex process.
After the first side of the media is printed and the trailing edge of the media is fed to where it clears the Next
EOF sensor, then the printer waits for the ink to dry in a predetermined amount of time. The feed system
then reverses the media direction, and feeds it into the duplex paper path.
Go Back
The PRA that holds the paper in contact with the feedroll is lifted just before the paper is reversed to avoid
jams. Once the media is fed backwards into the feedroll area, the PRA is lowered again. The exit roller and
the feed roller turn in reverse direction to bring the media to the nip of the first duplex roller (D1). The feed
roll and first duplex roller moves the paper forward into the nip of the second duplex roller (D2).
The first and second duplex rollers then push the media around a circular path back to the feed assist
rollers (A1 and A2). Deskewing of the paper is done when the media reaches the feed roll, similar to the
initial pick. After deskewing, the feed roller moves the media forward in to the print zone.
After the printing process happens in the print zone, the media exits through the exit rollers and lands in
the output bin.

The function of the fluid system is to transfer ink from the ink tanks to the printhead via the ink tubes. It is
composed of the following main components:
• Peristaltic Pump
This is a positive displacement type of pump used for pumping out a variety of fluids. It uses a rotor
with rollers attached to the internal circumference that compresses the flexible tube during turning.
• Vacuum Canister
This is used to build up pressure coming from the peristaltic pump.
• Maintenance Pinch Valves (MPV)
The MPV is composed of a motor, sensor, fingers and keys. It is a device that controls the flow of
vacuum pressure, air, and fluid by opening or closing the valves.
• Maintenance Cap
It is a rubber cap that is used to cover the printhead nozzles when it is on the maintenance station,
idle mode, or when the system is turned off. It is also used to prime the nozzles during initial priming.
• Ink supply Pinch Valves (IPV)
It functions similarly with the MPV. It is located on the top of the tank receiver and controls the
following tubes:
– Cyan tube
– Magenta tube
– Yellow tube
– Black tube
– Pressure tube for the (Back Pressure Device) BPD
– Pressure tube for the printhead
• Pressure Regulator
This is responsible for regulating the pressure to 1 to 1.5 psi, which is required by the BPD and
printhead inlet to prevent damage.
• tank Receiver
This holds the ink tanks in place.
• Back Pressure Device (BPD)
This is a device used for ink level sensing. It uses needles and circuit continuity to detect if ink level is
low.
• Inlet Previous
The inlet regulates the flow on ink fluid going to the printhead.
• Printhead
The printhead is responsible for spitting ink out into the paper. It uses thermal heat to create bubbles
inside that effectively pushes the ink towards the paper.
Next
Operation
The fluid system operates by undergoing a process called priming. During this process, ink is transferred from
Go Back
the ink tanks to the printhead via the ink tubes. The system uses a peristaltic pump to create a vacuum pressure
to move the ink from point A to point B. This vacuum pressure is used to remove the air out from the ink tube,
allowing the liquid to flow.
The goal of priming is to achieve a continuous ink flow on the ink tubes from the ink tanks to the printhead
nozzles. If the fluid connection is cut off, it is either due to a problem in the system or ink from the tanks has run
out.
Scanner
Function
The scanner collects information from the document and converts it to a digital image using the following
elements:
Operation
The document scanning section consists of a scanner that reads a single-sheet document placed on the glass
plate and a document feeder that can transport a multiple-sheet document for one or two-sided scanning
depending on the machine model.
At power on, the flatbed scanner will move to the left to find the home sensor. The flatbed scanner will stop once
the sensor is tripped. The scan bar will initialize, and start to move to the right with LEDs lit up to find its base
position that is a white strip under the glass plate.
If the scanner detects a document on the ADF, the CIS scan bar moves to the left past its base position and
stays on the scan area for scanning from the ADF. If no document is detected on that area, the printer would
scan from the flatbed.
Idler roller

Go Back
To output tray
Friction pad
Media is fed through the action of the paper pick and feed rollers. It enters the scan area and is ejected by the
exit roller. For a duplex document sheet, the image on side 1 and the image on side 2 are scanned at the same
time in the same pass.
Described below is the overview of the steps before document scanning and that of simplex and duplex
scanning modes.
Setting a document
When a document is set on the ADF tray and the leading edge is pushed into the tray until it stops, the paper
load sensor gives a signal to the machine that the document is loaded. The DC motor will rotate.
Preparation to Feed
First the pick roller moves down and presses the document on the document tray to enable document feed. The
pick roller moves down with the normal rotation of the ADF feed drive motor assembly and it moves up with the
reverse rotation of the latter.
Feed
Touching the moves the pick roller assembly down; powers on, and rotates the pick and separation rollers
to feed the media. The pick roller will turn to force the media between the nip of the separation roller and the
separation pad to prevent multiple feeds. Media continues to be fed through the nip of the feed and idle rollers.
For multiple simplex document sheets, feed is performed in the following sequence:
1. The first document sheet is fed to the ADF pick roll assembly.
2. The document sheet is fed to the separation roller, and then fed to the feed roller. Next
3. The document sheet is fed at the feed speed corresponding to the selected resolution, and the image
on it is scanned with the CIS scan bar at the scan area.
4. After the image is scanned, the document sheet is fed and ejected by the ADF exit rollers that are Go Back
driven by the ADF transport motor.
5. When the trail edge of the first document sheet releases the separation nip, the feed of the
succeeding document sheet starts.
For multiple duplex document sheets, feed is performed in the following sequence:
1. The first document sheet is fed to the ADF pick roll assembly.
2. The document sheet is fed to the separation roller assembly, and then fed to the feed roller.
3. The document sheet is fed at the feed speed corresponding to the selected resolution, and the image
on it is scanned with the CIS scan bar at the scan area.
4. After the image is scanned on both sides, the document sheet is fed and ejected by the exit rollers
that are driven by the ADF transport motor.
5. When the trail edge of the first document sheet releases the separation nip, the feed of the
succeeding document sheet starts.
Scanning
Once the leading edge of the media hits the paper path sensor arm, a signal is sent to the system board. This
indicates the start of the scanning process. There are certain step counts that relate the paper movement before
the CIS scan bar starts to scan. The paper size that is set in the control panel will dictate the CIS scan bar when
to stop scanning. The paper will continue to be fed until it exits, regardless of what paper size is set in the control
panel. Once all the document sheets are fed, scanned, and exited; and the paper load sensor is not triggered,
the system will detect that the tray is empty. This causes the motor to turn in reverse direction and the pick roller
to rotate upward—waiting for the next scan job to happen.
The flatbed scanner works by scanning the document on the glass plate per line on a horizontal direction moving
from left to right. It uses a CIS scan bar to convert an analog signal (image of the document) to a digital signal
ready for scanning or creating a copy. The CIS scan bar sits on top of a carriage unit that is pulled using a belt
and a DC motor. Before scanning, the CIS scan bar seeks its base position that is a white strip under the glass
plate. Once it is in the base position, the system will time the spin of the DC motor so that the scan bar will move
based on the paper size that was set from the control panel. When the scan bar has reached the end of the set
paper size, it moves back to its base position.
Once the document is fully scanned, the system card processes the data. It recreates a digital copy of the
image, which can be displayed on the PC as a scan output, printed for a copy job, or sent electronically for a fax
job.

• Keep the ESD-sensitive part in its original shipping container (a special “ESD bag”) until you are ready to
install the part into the machine.
Disassembly
• Make the least-possible movements with your body to prevent an increase of static electricity from clothing Flow chart
fibers, carpets, and furniture.
• Put the ESD wrist strap on your wrist. Connect the wrist band to the system ground point. This discharges
any static electricity in your body to the machine.
• Hold the ESD-sensitive part by its edge connector shroud (cover); do not touch its pins. If you are removing
a pluggable module, use the correct tool.
• Do not place the ESD-sensitive part on the machine cover or on a metal table; if you need to put down the
ESD-sensitive part for any reason, first put it into its special bag.
• Machine covers and metal tables are electrical grounds. They increase the risk of damage, because they
make a discharge path from your body through the ESD-sensitive part. (Large metal objects can be
discharge paths without being grounded.)
• Prevent ESD-sensitive parts from being accidentally touched by other personnel. Install machine covers
when you are not working on the machine, and do not put unprotected ESD-sensitive parts on a table.
• If possible, keep all ESD-sensitive parts in a grounded metal cabinet (case).
• Be extra careful in working with ESD-sensitive parts when cold-weather heating is used, because low
humidity increases static electricity.

Remove the power cord from the electrical outlet before you connect or disconnect any cable
or electronic board or assembly for personal safety and to prevent damage to the printer.
Disconnect any connections between the printer and PCs/peripherals.
Notes:
• Some removal procedures require removing cable ties. You must replace cable ties during reassembly to
avoid pinching wires, obstructing the paper path, or restricting mechanical movement.
• Remove the ink tanks. See “Ink tank removal” on page 4-5.
• Always remove the power cord from the AC electrical outlet. Do not REBRICK the printer. Also remove the
power supply from the printer. See“Power supply removal” on page 4-10.

This chapter describes procedures for printer preventive maintenance. Follow these recommendations to help
prevent problems and maintain optimum performance.
Next
The purpose of this inspection guide is to aid you in identifying unsafe conditions.
If any unsafe conditions exist, find out how serious the hazard could be and if you can continue before you
correct the hazard.
• Damaged, missing, or altered parts, especially in the area of the On/Off switch and the power supply
• Damaged, missing, or altered covers, especially in the area of the top cover and the power supply cover
• Possible safety exposure from any non-Lexmark attachments
Remove the power cord from the electrical outlet before you connect or disconnect any cable
or electronic board or assembly for personal safety and to prevent damage to the printer.
Disconnect any connections between the printer and PCs/peripherals.
Warning: Do not use household cleaners or detergents, as they may damage the finish of the printer.
Warning: Using a damp cloth to clean the interior may cause damage to your printer.
1. Make sure that the printer is turned off and unplugged from the wall outlet.
2. Remove all paper from the printer.
3. Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water.
4. Wipe only the outside of the printer, making sure to remove any ink residue that has accumulated on the
exit bin.
5. Make sure the printer is dry before beginning a new print job.
Note: Make sure all ink or corrective fluid on a document is dry before placing the document on the

Warning: Do not use liquids, household cleaners, or detergents, as they may damage the touch screen.
The touch screen of your printer control panel may need to be cleaned from time to time to remove fingerprints
and smudges.
1. Make sure the printer is turned off and unplugged from the wall outlet.
2. Wipe the touch screen with the cloth that came with your printer or with another clean, dry, lint-free cloth.
When moving the printer and optional trays to another location, follow these precautions:
• Any cart used to move the printer must have a surface able to support the full footprint of the printer. Any
cart used to move the options must have a surface able to support the dimensions of the options.
• Make sure the bin extender and the exit bin are in their original positions.
• Keep the printer in an upright position to prevent the ink from leaking.
• Avoid severe jarring movements.
