Engineer’s Comments:
The mix design aimed at producing the Bituminous Wearing Course with 25mm nominal size
aggregates, conforming to the Tanzanian Specification for Road Works and as modified in the
Special specification Clause 4202.
2. MATERIALS
The trial mixes contained the crushed aggregates originated from a parent rock blasted and crushed at
the Chemba quarry (owned by the Contractor). The aggregates consisted of the following sizes:
Fine aggregate (0-5)
Coarse aggregate (5-10)
Coarse aggregate (10-25)
Crusher Dust
The binder used for the Marshall asphalt is the 60/70 pen bitumen, delivered in the site in a drum.
3. FLAKINESS INDEX
The Flakiness Indexes of the coarse aggregates are ranging from 4.1 to 9.5%, which conforms to the
project specification (25% max.)
9. SAND EQUIVALENT
The Sand Equivalent on tested fine aggregate (aggregates less than 4.75mm) is 92.7%, which
conforms to the project specification (45% Min.)
