1. INTRODUCTION

The mix design aimed at producing the Bituminous Wearing Course with 25mm nominal size
aggregates, conforming to the Tanzanian Specification for Road Works and as modified in the
Special specification Clause 4202.

2. MATERIALS
The trial mixes contained the crushed aggregates originated from a parent rock blasted and crushed at
the Chemba quarry (owned by the Contractor). The aggregates consisted of the following sizes:
 Fine aggregate (0-5)
 Coarse aggregate (5-10)
 Coarse aggregate (10-25)
 Crusher Dust
The binder used for the Marshall asphalt is the 60/70 pen bitumen, delivered in the site in a drum.

3. FLAKINESS INDEX
The Flakiness Indexes of the coarse aggregates are ranging from 4.1 to 9.5%, which conforms to the
project specification (25% max.)

4. AGGREGATE CRUSHING VALUE

The aggregate crushing value tested on the coarse aggregate is 17.3% (less than 25%, the max.
specified)

5. TEN PERCENT FINES VALUE

The Ten Percent Fitness Value (TFV dry) tested on the coarse aggregate is 275kN, which conforms to
the project specification (130kN Min.)

6. SODIUM SULPHUR SOUNDNESS

The Sodium Sulphur Soundness (5 cycles, % loss) tested on the coarse aggregate is 1.6%, which
conforms to the project specification (30% Max.)

7. CLAY LUMPS AND FRIABLE PARTICLES

The Clay Lumps and Friable particles on tested coarse aggregate 0.8%, which conforms to the project
specification (1% Max.)

8. SG & WATER ABSORPTION

The maximum water absorption recorded is 1.0 %, while the average absorption is 0.7 %. This is
equal to 1% as required in the Specification.

9. SAND EQUIVALENT
The Sand Equivalent on tested fine aggregate (aggregates less than 4.75mm) is 92.7%, which
conforms to the project specification (45% Min.)

10. AGGREGATE IMPACT VALUE

The Aggregate Impact Value on tested coarse aggregate is 24%, which conforms to the project
specification (25% Max.)

11. COMBINED GRADING

The proposed mix has the following combination:
Aggregate size Proportion
Cement 1.5 %
Crusher Dust 1.5 %
Fine agg. (0 - 5) 43 %
Coarse (5 - 10) 14 %
Coarse (10 - 25) 40 %

That combination resulted in the following continuous grading:

Sieve size (mm) % Passing Project Spec.
25 100 100
20 99 78 - 100
14 80 60 - 84
10 69 50 - 72
5.0 52 35 - 55
2.36 39 24 - 42
1.18 28 17 - 33
0.600 20 12 - 25
0.300 13 8 - 19
0.150 8 5 - 13
0.075 6 5-9

12. MARSHALL PROPERTIES

The proposed mix has the following properties:
Property Test Result Project Spec.
Optimum Bitumen Content 4.5 % ----
Density 2.376kg/m3 ----
Stability 22.47 KN 9 KN Min.
Flow 2.8 mm 2 - 4 mm
Void Filled with Bitumen (VFB) 71% 65 – 75%
VIM 4.7 % 3 – 5%

VMA 16.6 % 14 % Min.

13. MAXIMUM SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF MIX (Rice’s Method)

The maximum specific gravity of the mix was 2.494 (measured).

14. THE PROPOSED MIX PROPORTION

The following mix proportion is hereby proposed for approval:
Aggregate size Proportion
Cement 1.5 %
Crusher Dust 1.5%
Fine agg. (0 – 5) 43 %
Coarse (5 – 10) 14 %
Coarse (10 – 25) 40 %

Bitumen Content (per total mix) 4.5 %
