WIRELINE RETRIEVABLE SURFACE CONTROLLED
SUBSURFACE SAFETY VALVE
7. FUNCTIONAL TESTING PROCEDURE:
7.1 The complete identification and specification of the product including observed testing data’s
as specified in API SPEC 14A ANNEX - F.1.20 to be recorded.
7.2 Record the unique serial number i.e. ATF number of the product.
7.3 Place the SCSSV in a fixture capable of retaining and sealing the valve in a vertical position.
7.4 Open the SCSSV with zero pressure in the test section. Adjust and stabilize the
hydraulic control pressure to the recommended hold-open pressure (1500 PSI).
7.5 Isolate the hydraulic control pressure from the source.
7.6 Monitor for a minimum of 5 min. If a loss greater than ± 5% (127.5 PSI) of the
applied pressure is detected after stabilization, the SCSSV fails the functional test.
7.7 Close and open the SCSSV five times with zero pressure in the test section.
7.8 Record the full-closed and full-open hydraulic control pressures.
7.9 Every time control line pressure should repeat within ± 5% of the average pressure of
the five valve cycles.
7.10 Every time control line pressure should repeat within specified control pressure
tolerance (1500 PSI ± 127.5 PSI) .
7.11 If each pressure is not within these the limits, the SCSSV fails the functional test.
7.12 Fill the test section with water or another suitable liquid to displace air from the test
section, and proceed as follows.
7.13 Close the SCSSV.
7.14 Adjust and stabilize the pressure across the entire test section to 150 % of the rated
working pressure (i.e. 7,500 psi ± 250 psi).
7.15 Hold the pressure for a minimum of 5 min.
7.16 Reduce the pressure in the test section to zero.
7.17 Repeat the test once.
7.18 The SCSSV fails the functional test if leakage is detected through the hydraulic
control port(s).
7.19 Open the SCSSV with zero pressure in the test section and record the full-open
hydraulic control pressures.
7.20 And close the SCSSV with zero pressure in the test section and record the full-closed
hydraulic control pressures.
7.21 Open the SCSSV.
7.22 Apply pressure of 50% of the rated working pressure (2,500 PSI ± 125 PSI) of the
test valve to the entire test section.
7.23 Record the test valve bore pressure (base pressure).
7.24 Close and open test valve five times while maintaining the test section pressure as
defined above within the specified range.
NOTE: The test section pressure m a y increase as the valve is opened, and then
m a y decrease as the valve is closed due to the differential volume of the hydraulic
operating piston.

WIRELINE RETRIEVABLE SURFACE CONTROLLED
SUBSURFACE SAFETY VALVE

The full-open/full-closed hydraulic control line pressures should be adjusted based

on the change in test section pressure at the time of control line pressure
measurement.

The adjusted control line pressure is determined by adding/subtracting the actual

control pressure with the difference between the base pressure and the actual test
section pressure recorded at the time of each opening/closing pressure measurement.

If the five adjusted hydraulic control line pressures do not repeat within ±10% of their
average or ± 0,7 MPa ( ± 100 psi), whichever is greater, or if any joint leakage is
detected, the test valve fails.
7.25 Adjust and stabilize the test section pressure to 100 % ± 5 % of the rated working
pressure (5,000 PSI ± 250 PSI) of the SCSSV.
7.26 Full open the SCSSV
7.27 Record the full-open hydraulic control line pressure.
7.28 Close the SCSSV.
7.29 Record the full-closed hydraulic control line pressure.
7.30 Bleed the hydraulic line control pressure to zero.
7.31 Adjust and stabilize the test section pressure to 100 % ± 5 % of the rated working
pressure (5,000 PSI ± 250 PSI) of the SCSSV.
7.32 Monitor for leakage at hydraulic control line ports(s) for a minimum of 5 min.
7.33 If any leakage is detected, the SCSSV fails the functional test.
7.34 Bleed the pressure above the SCSSV closure mechanism to zero.
7.35 Adjust and stabilize the pressure below the closure mechanism to 100 % of the rated
working pressure (5,000 PSI ± 250 PSI) of the SCSSV.
7.36 Measure liquid leakage for a minimum of 5 min.
7.37 If the leakage rate exceeds 10 cm3/min, the SCSSV fails the functional test.
7.38 Remove the liquid from the test section.
7.39 Open the SCSSV.
7.40 Record the full-open hydraulic control line pressure.
7.41 Adjust and stabilize the pressure in the entire test section with gas to
1,4 MPa ± 0,07 MPa (200 psi ± 10 psi).
7.42 Close the SCSSV.
7.43 Record the full-closed hydraulic control pressure.
7.44 Bleed the hydraulic control pressure to zero.
7.45 Adjust and stabilize the test section pressure with gas to 1,4 MPa ± 0,07 MPa (200
PSI ± 10 PSI).
7.46 Monitor for gas leakage at the hydraulic control port(s) for a minimum of 5 min.
7.47 If any leakage is detected, the SCSSV fails the functional test.
7.48 Bleed the pressure above the SCSSV's closure mechanism to zero.
7.49 Adjust and stabilize the pressure below the SCSSV's closure mechanism to 1,4 MPa ±
0,07 MPa (200 PSI ± 10 PSI) with gas.
7.50 Measure the leakage rate for a minimum of 5 min.
7.51 If the leakage rate exceeds 0.14 m3/min (5 scf/min), the SCSSV fails functional test.
