METHOD STATEMENT OF SURVEY WORK
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
This general statement mentions the establishment of Control Point & Topographic Surveying of Project area.
This control surveying will include the checking of all relevant points and locations such as Bangladesh Bench
Mark (SOB BM), Preliminary Survey Work, and Traverse station for proper execution of the work. Topographic
survey will include longitudinal and cross-sectional survey of the existing rail track, including the bridges and
culverts. It will also include the establishment of secondary or subsequent topographic survey control
monuments. Topographical survey shall cover the works of fixation and track alignment including setting up of
gradients, vertical and horizontal profile, tangent, super elevations, curves, IPs etc. The result of survey works
which includes Setting-Out and Staking will be the basis of subsequent construction activities subject to The
Engineers’ approval.

Preliminary survey is performed in order to assess the overall site condition and to establish proper survey plan
accordingly. The contract survey data will be made available at site and will review the availability of its
completeness & readiness for sufficiency for executing the survey.
All primary control points of SOB (Survey of Bangladesh as annexed in annexure 1to 5 shall be identified and
book/contract data shall be reviewed in reference to north pole, elevation, geographical and UTM coordinates
etc. by survey team whether provided points are accessible and in useful condition. If any damages are found,
those will be reconstructed. To make TBM visible from one to another, an additional TBM will be installed at
250m interval for whole stretch of the alignment.
In this purpose two BR point which are almost at the middle of the alignment will consider the reference point or
the base line of the survey work. Contract survey data will be used for this purpose. In the contract survey data
coordinates of BR-1 to BR-142 are given including the RL of those points. These points are allocated along the
whole stretch of alignment approximately @ 400 to 500m interval. BR-76 (Ch. 166+990) and BR-77 (Ch.
167+440) which are located near (Ch. 167+285) will consider reference point to start the survey work.
After establishing the reference point survey will be conducted by the Total Station. The corrected coordinates
will be adjusted by further traverse survey. The coordinate of the other BR point will be obtained for subsequent
control point surveying.
The new coordinates which are obtained in reference to the BR-76 and BR-77 will be established at appropriate
intervals in the construction area along the project. These survey points will be the reference points during
subsequent topographic survey and other construction activities.
BR point will be made by reinforced concrete stake with iron frame mounted, which has dimensions of be
30cmX30cmX100cm and embedded 70 cm into the ground and protruded 30cm above the ground. Cross head
bolt with 25mm dia will be driven at the center of stake as BR. Concrete stakes shall be painted yellow color with
surrounding protection, and specific name of points shall be given to each BM. The location of BM shall satisfy
the conditions below:
i) To identify easily
Open Traverse Survey will be performed to establish horizontal control network to all BR location along the
alignment based on the BR-76 and BR-77
METHOD STATEMENT OF SURVEY WORK
i) The Total Station ‘’SOKKIA’’ with 3 second angle reading will be used for traverse survey.
ii) Traverse survey will be implemented at least 2 times, and the coordinates will be implemented at least 2 times
for forward and backward.
iii) Route of Traversing will be commenced from existing BR -76 and BR-77as the correct reference points and
then continue to next BR locations.
iv) Two survey teams will continue the work in reverse direction as one team will forward from Ch. 167+285 to
201+500 and another team from Ch. 167+285 to Ch. 129+903).
Leveling measurement will be performed in order to establish vertical control network along traverse points by
using primary network of existing BR.
ii) Leveling measurement for each section will be implemented for forward and backward directions by the double
run leveling method.
iii) The measurement of leveling will be commenced from the existing SOB Point which has elevation confirmed
by SOB, and then continue to BR points established on site.
Level closing error along each route will not exceed 10X(D)0.5, where D is leveling distance in Km.
v) Intermediate SOB Point which is located at nort-west corner of war cemetery in Mainamati, Comilla will also be
connected with leveling measurement.
Topographic survey shall be undertaken with Total Station. The survey team will obtain coordinates and levels to
define the existing railway track and Bridge-culverts along the alignment. Electronic data recorders will record all
of the information and recorded in a drawing to make further construction planning. Existing control points such
as BR points will be used for topographic survey.
i) Spot height and topographic details will be measured by using Total Station “SOKKIA”.
ii) The survey measurement will be made by installation of the survey instrument at established BR points which
have coordinates and elevation.
iv) Two survey teams will continue the work in reverse direction as one team will forward from Ch. 167+285 to
201+500 and another team from Ch. 167+285 to Ch. 129+903.
METHOD STATEMENT OF SURVEY WORK
Cross sections at every 25m distance along the alignment of the existing railway track will be surveyed and
recorded in drawings to make further construction planning. Newly established and approved BR Points will be
utilized for Cross Section Survey.
i) Measurement of Cross Section Survey will be done by using Level Machine “SOKKIA/Topcon”
ii) Corridor of Cross Section Survey shall cover the area of ROW.
iii) Two or Three survey team will continue the work accordingly with proper concern of the Engineers.
i) Contractor shall accurately establish setting out of the works, the centre line of the railway, and approval by the
Engineer.
ii) Center line of the railway alignment shall be precisely referenced at every 50 m intervals in plain under the
witness by the Engineer, with marker pegs and chainage boards set in or near the limits of the Right-of Way.
iii) A schedule of reference dimensions shall be prepared and shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval.
iv) These markers shall be maintained until the works reach finished formation level and are accepted by the
Engineer.
v) Upon reaching the formation level stage of each construction segment, the Contractor shall set out by the
centre line again and obtain approval of the Engineer, Such re-fixed centerline shall be accurately referenced by
marker pegs set at the outer limits of the formation under the witness of the Engineer.
vi) No reference peg or marker shall be moved or withdrawn without the approval of the Engineer and no
earthwork or structural work shall commence until the centre line has been referenced.
4. Data Processing
Major components of the office works shall include the generation of topographical survey plans, preparing
maps, preparing cross sections and longitudinal sections, calculation of earthwork and reporting to the Engineer.
Final map presentations shall be in AutoCAD format. Most of the office work shall be done in the field office and
also in Dhaka.
The following instruments, equipment and software were utilized in the field survey and the office work.
5 Deployment of Manpower
An experienced survey team leader shall be deployed for controlling the survey work in the field and for daily
survey data processing in the field. Total six survey teams shall be engaged in various discipline of survey work.
The office staffs shall be responsible to compute the data (traverse computation, leveling computation, etc.) and
supply this information to the survey team for field work as well drawing work and plan preparation. Both field
work and office work shall be monitored by the survey team leader who shall be responsible for overall survey
work and coordination with the lead Engineer. The relevant surveyor shall be responsible for clarifying their
survey work to the Data Analyst and CAD Operator when necessary so that discrepancies and errors could be
minimized in the field. This process shall be strictly followed in the field under the control of the survey team
leader. Inspection, verification and correction instructions shall be communicated by the Engineer at field,
contractor shall comply accordingly.
The following is the list of personnel shall be deployedin the field and the office.
