Lesson 1:
The next two lessons will teach you about the importance of diction or word choice in a text.
Hopefully, you will be able to use this knowledge to improve your comprehension skills, your ability
to analyse texts and to write with sensitivity.
In order to become a more mindful reader and wordsmith, you will need to understand denotation
and connotation. Please record these two definitions in the literature section of your notebook.
Exercise 1
In the literature section of your book, draw up a table in which you will record the denotative and
connotative meanings of the following words:
Context is very important when you are asked to consider the denotative and connotative meanings of a word.
Consider the following example:
a masked stranger…
In the context of a robbery, this would convey the connotations of deception, menace and danger.
In the context of a masked ball, it might imply romance, intrigue or mystery.
In the context of the Covid-pandemic it could suggest protection or safety.
Context or looking at a specific word within a text is critical to meaningful analysis. Consider these two
examples from “Blueback”.
1. In the context of this story, the denotative meaning of ‘Groper’ is a fish found off the Australian coast.
The connotative meaning is of a pure manifestation of nature’s beauty with a mysterious power. This fish
takes on a magical symbolism in the course of the story.
2. The peppermint tree’s connotative meaning is one of love, connection and loyalty in the context of this
particular tale.
As you are reading you should be mindful of the connotative meanings of words. Some of them will become
powerful symbols through their extended use in the story and will have a real impact on the reader.
Note:
When we test your understanding of a word’s significance we test it in the following way.
The denotative meaning would be tested by asking you to supply a synonym or dictionary meaning. This would

We would check your understanding of connotation by asking you what a particular word
or image implies or suggests. Can you see that the testing of connotation
