Gr10 Science Full Set1
Time Allowed: 3 hours Maximum Marks: 80
General Instructions:

1. The question paper comprises three sections – A, B and C. Attempt all the sections.

2. All questions are compulsory.

3. Internal choice is given in each section.

4. All questions in Section A are one-mark questions comprising MCQ, VSA type and assertion-
reason type questions. They are to be answered in one word or in one sentence.
5. All questions in Section B are three-mark, short-answer type questions. These are to be
answered in about 50 - 60 words each.

6. All questions in Section C are five-mark, long-answer type questions. These are to be answered
in about 80 – 90 words each.
7. This question paper consists of a total of 30 questions.

Section A
1. Write the balanced chemical equation for the following reaction and identify the type of [1]
reaction.
Potassium bromide (aq) + Barium iodide (aq) → Potassium iodide (aq) + Barium bromide (aq)
2. The electronic configuration of an element X is 2, 8, 8, 2. To which period and group of the [1]
modern periodic table does X belong? State its valency. Justify your answer in each case.
3. Answer the questions that follow on the basis of your understanding of the following [4]
paragraph and the related studied concepts:
The plant has a dome-like structure built with bricks. A slurry of cow-dung and water is made
in the mixing tank from where it is fed into the digester. The digester is a sealed chamber in
which there is no oxygen. Anaerobic micro-organisms that do not require oxygen decompose
or break down complex compounds of the cow-dung slurry. It takes a few days for the
decomposition process to be complete and generate gases like methane, carbon dioxide,
hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. The bio-gas is stored in the gas tank above the digester from
which they are drawn through pipes for use. Biogas is an excellent fuel as it contains up to
75% methane. It burns without smoke, leaves no residue like ash in wood, charcoal and coal
burning. Its heating capacity is high. Biogas is also used for lighting. The slurry left behind is
removed periodically and used as excellent manure, rich in nitrogen and phosphorous. The
large-scale utilisation of bio-waste and sewage material provides a safe and efficient method
of waste-disposal besides supplying energy and manure.

iv. 'Biogas is considered to be boon to the farmers', why?
4. In animals, control and coordination are provided by nervous and muscular tissues. Touching [4]
a hot object is an urgent and dangerous situation for us. We need to detect it, and respond to
it. How do we detect that we are touching a hot object? All information from our environment
is detected by the specialised tips of some nerve cells. These receptors are usually located in
our sense organs, such as the inner ear, the nose, the tongue, and so on. So gustatory receptors
will detect taste while olfactory receptors will detect smell. This information, acquired at the
end of the dendritic tip of a nerve cell sets off a chemical reaction that creates an electrical
impulse. This impulse travels from the dendrite to the cell body, and then along the axon to its
end. At the end of the axon, the electrical impulse sets off the release of some chemicals. These
chemicals cross the gap, or synapse, and start a similar electrical impulse in a dendrite of the
next neuron. This is a general scheme of how nervous impulses travel in the body. A similar
synapse finally allows delivery of such impulses from neurons to other cells, such as muscles
cells or gland.

Answer the following questions:

a. What is the role of axon?
b. From where electrical impulse travels?
c. Name the chemical which released at the end of axon to transmit the signal to the other
neuron.
