The plant and equipment shall be checked for operational before each shift of commencement
of works including, but not limited, to safety and operational compliance.
The same shall be executed for all small tools and miscellaneous items.
The foremen and engineers on Site shall ensure that all necessary equipment is available
prior to commencement of work including that all equipment is fit and safe for the purpose.

4.3 Site Execution:

4.3.1 Pre-Construction / Preparatory works:

The following activities will be conducted before starting the works:

a. Safety induction of the worker and toolbox talk.
b. Positions and access routes will be agreed with the Engineer/Client.
c. It is generally understood that site is clean of all the underground facilities but to avoid
any incidents trial pits will be done before starting the excavation.
d. Excavated area will be barricaded before starting the work.
e. Workers will be briefed about the activity before starting the work following the correct
sequencing of work execution.
f. The workers will be briefed about safety measures.
g. A survey work will be done by survey team to check the exact ground level and
calculate the excavation quantity based on that survey
h. Safety signage like “Deep excavation /Danger” shall be installed at the excavated
areas.
i. A site walk out will be undertaken to ascertain any further hazards not identified
previously.
j. Banksmen shall be deployed to avoid hazards at site.

4.3.2 Work Methodology

4.3.2.1 Excavation for Foundation

For excavation for strip footings and raft footings, we will use Jack hammer since the
strata is hard. Followings are preliminary works before starting the works:
a. Temporary lights will be installed at night under the direction of H & S officer,
supervised by Engineer.
b. Mark out areas of environmental and/or archaeological significance.
c. The area to be excavated will be clearly marked on the surface using lime.
d. The jack hammer will excavate the marked area up to desire depth and
excavated material from the excavation will be loaded into dumpers and tipped
away from the working area.
e. The depth of excavation shall be checked periodically by Surveyor to avoid over
excavation.
f. The bank of excavated area shall be sloped 60 degrees (for battering) and shall
be maintained to avoid collapse of the bank into the excavated area.
g. All excavated material shall be kept away from the edge of excavation or shall be
stock piled to the area designated by the Engineer.
h. For all excavation activities, adequate safety barriers, sign boards, advance
warning signs would be used.
i. For foundation, as soon as the excavation reaches the required depth/elevation
the surface shall be levelled and shall be compacted as per specifications.
j. Before the compaction starts, it shall be made sure that the excavated level is
free from standing water or excessive moisture content.
k. Inspection would be conducted during compaction for checking and approval of
the Engineer.
l. The compaction test report shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval prior
to precede succeeding work.
4.3.2.2 Excavation for Manholes
The excavation for Manholes will be done in steps due to large dimension in depth and
small dimension in length & width. The depth dimension starts from 5m to 7m. . We will
use jack hammer as there is rock. We will use following methodology for earthworks.
a. Temporary lights will be installed at night under the direction of H & S officer,
supervised by Engineer.
b. Sensitive areas shall be marked out within or adjacent to works with signage.
c. Mark out areas of environmental and/or archaeological significance.
d. The excavated area shall be marked properly and clear before starting the
works.
e. Using Jack Hammer, first 2m depth shall be excavated and material from the
excavation will be loaded into dumpers and tipped away from the working area if
it is not suitable for the backfilling works, else stockpiled at site. Then the Jack
Hammer shall be shifted to depth of 2m and another 2m depth shall be
excavated. The same methodology shall be used to reach the required depth of
excavation.
f. The depth of excavation shall be checked periodically by Surveyor to avoid over
excavation.
g. The bank of excavated area shall be sloped 60 degrees and shall be maintained
to avoid collapse of the bank into the excavated area.
h. All excavated material shall be kept away from the edge of excavation or shall be
stock piled to the area designated by the Project manager/ Construction
manager.
i. For all excavation activities, adequate safety barriers, sign boards, advance
warning signs would be used.
j. For foundation, as soon as the excavation reaches the required depth/elevation
the surface shall be levelled and shall be compacted as per specifications.
k. Before the compaction starts, it shall make sure that the excavated level is free
from standing water or excessive moisture content.
l. Inspection would be conducted during compaction for checking and approval of
the Engineer.
m. The compaction test report shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval prior
to precede succeeding work.

4.3.3 Instructions

The personnel shall be trained and ensure that the following occurs:
a. All hand tools, equipment or material will be secured at all times;
b. Warning signs shall be erected before start of work;
c. Ensure machines are operated by competent licensed certified operators with all
necessary signallers or banks man;
d. No worker shall be allowed under moving equipment like crane, Jack Hammer
excavator, Loader etc.

4.4 Inspection and Hand-over:
