V.57 The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby and she gave birth to a son.
V.58 Her neighbours and relatives heard how wonderfully good the Lord had been to her,
and they all rejoiced with her.
V.59 When the baby was a week old, they came to circumcise him, and they were going to
name him Zechariah, after his father.
.
V.60 But his mother said, “No, his name is to be John”.
V.61 They said to her, “But you haven’t got any relatives with that name”.
V.62 Then they made signs to his father, asking him what name he would like the boy to
have.
V.63 Zechariah asked for a writing pad and wrote, “His name is John”. How surprised they
all were.
V.64 At that moment, Zechariah was able to speak again, and he started praising God.
V.65 The neighbours were filled with fear, and the news about these things spread through
all the hill country of Judea.
V.66 Everyone who heard of it thought about it and asked, “What is this child going to be”?
For it was plain that the Lord’s power was upon him.
1. How did John’s birth fulfil the angelic words in Luke 1 : 13–17.
2. What were the immediate reactions of the neighbours and relatives in relation
to these events?
V.20 He went straight to the synagogues and began to preach that Jesus was the
son of God.
V.21 All who heard him were amazed and asked, Isn’t he the one who in Jerusalem
was killing those who worship that man Jesus? And didn’t he come here for
the very purpose of arresting those people and taking them back to the chief
priest?
V.22 But Saul’s preaching became even more powerful and his proofs that Jesus
was the Messiah were so convincing that Jews who lived in Damascus could
not answer him.
V.23 After many days had gone by, the Jews met together and made plans to kill
Saul.
V.24 But he was told of their plan. Day and night they watched the city gates
inorder to kill him.
V.25 But one night Saul’s followers took him and let him down through an opening in
the wall, lowering him in a basket.
V.26 Saul went to Jerusalem and tried to join the disciples. But they would not
believe that he was a disciple and they were afraid of him.
V.27 Then Barnabas came to his help and took him to the Apostles. He explained
to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road and that the Lord had spoken
to him. He also told them how boldly Saul had preached in the name of Jesus
in Damascus.

1. What would others have expected Saul to say when he came to the
Synagogues?
2. When he proceeds to preach about Christ, how do the people react? Why?
4. What significant, important role has Barnabas played in the acceptance of Saul
by the disciples in Jerusalem?
V.1 Freedom is what we have. Christ has set us free, then as free people, and not
to allow yourselves to become slaves again.
V.2 Listen I, Paul, tell you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, it means
that Christ is of no use to you at all.
V.3 Once more I warn any man who allows himself to be circumcised that he is
obliged to obey the whole law.
V.4 Those of you who try to be put right with God by obeying the law have cut
yourselves off from Christ. You are outside God’s grace.
V.5 As for us, our hope is that God will put us right with him, and this is what we
wait for by the power of God’s spirit working through our faith.
V.6 For when we are in union with Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor the lack of
it makes any difference at all, what matters is faith that works through love.
