Selected Philippine Political Caricature
The caricatures are a graphic depiction of the events that went on under the American
colonial period, all the challenges, scandals and influence brought to the Filipinos by the
Americans. Those prewar caricatures that were seen on the book entitled “Philippine Cartoons:
Political Caricature of the American Era 1900-1940” written by Alfred W. McCoy made a
history that will never be forgotten by many.
Philippine political cartoons gained full expression during the American era. Filipino
artists recorded national attitudes toward the coming of the Americans as well as the changing
more and times. While the cartoons compiled in this book speak for themselves, historian Alfred
McCoy’s extensive research in Philippine and American archives provides a comprehensive
background not only to the cartoons but to the turbulent period as well. Alfredo Roces, who
designed the document, contributes an essay on Philippine graphic satire of the period.
The importance of the text is that future generations will be able to have a glimpse of the
past Philippine society through these cartoons. Also, it serves as a study and reference tool for
further generations. Through the use of political cartoons, people get to visualize politics and
appreciate the representations which are within their worldview.
The text contribution to understanding Philippine History is that the works of art
editorials in the study of history is a good strategy to make students more engaged in learning the
course. People’s opinions, sentiments and aspirations of the time they were published can be
reflected and analyzed in the works of art. Its role and importance must be reevaluated since it is
a powerful medium in the context of different events in the Philippine History.
