• Following Delhi, the state governments of Kerala, Odisha started plasma banks.
Maharashtra Government recently announced that about its launch of plasma banks in
Malegaon and Dharavi.
• National Level plasma banks – The plasma banks set up by the state governments
operate within the states. On the other hand, the plasma bank launched in Delhi
operates at national level. The second national level plasma bank is to be opened in
Tamil Nadu.

• The Agreement was signed for the tribal entrepreneurs working under the Van Dhan programme
of TRIFED to access 2600+ research works of several institutions that are part of Unnat Bharat
Abhiyan. With the new agreement, the tribal forest dwellers engaged in Minor Forest Produce will
be able to access new processing technologies, mentorship transformational digital systems,
product innovation and handholding.
• VIBHA Movement – The IIT-TRIFED partnership will also receive help from VIBHA movement.
VIBHA is Vijnana Bharati science movement. The movement creates awareness about significant
development of science and technology in India. It will map and reach out to various stake holders
to converge with the focus to strengthen Van Dhan Yojana. The movement was founded by the
eminent scientists of Indian Institute of Science, IISc.
• Unnat Bharat Abhiyan – The Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship programme of the Ministry of
Human Resource and Development. The programme aims to link a higher education institute with
at least 5 villages. So far 13,702 villages have been adopted by 2,474 institutes.
National Transit Pass System (NTPS)

Javadekar virtually launched the piloting of the National Transit Pass System
(NTPS) as another step towards Digital India Movement. The pilot project will be
functional in Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Telangana, and by this Diwali it will be
operational in pan India.
• NTPS will replace manual paper-based transit system by online transit system
enabling ease of movement of timber, bamboo and other minor forest produce.
• In this regard, people can apply and receive e-Passes for transit of forest produce
from mobile application without physically going to forest department offices
Indian Navy’s largest Solar plant was inaugurated at the INA, Ezhimala
• Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawal, Flag Officer Commanding-in-chief, Southern Naval

Command (SNC), virtually employed the 3 MegaWatt (MW) largest Solar Power Plant at
the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerala.
• The project is a part of the Indian Government’s initiative of National Solar Mission, to
achieve 100 GigaWatt (GW) of solar Power by 2022.
• It is the largest established power plant by the Indian Navy with a lifespan of 25 years.
• The solar panels are 9,180 highly efficient monocrystalline panels employed with the
latest technology.
• The projects has been executed by the Kerala State Electronics Development
Corporation Ltd (KELTRON).
India to have 60% Renewable Energy by 2030
• Raj Kumar Singh, Minister of State (MoS) (IC) Power and New & Renewable Energy stated that India
will have around 60% of the installed capacity of the electricity generation from renewable resources by

2030.
• He made this remark in the webinar on Energy Transition at the second pre-event hosted by The World
Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2021 in collaboration with Energy Transitions Commission
(ETC) India.
• By 2030, the renewable energy capacity of India would reach 510 GW with around 450 GW of power
generation capacity from renewable sources like solar and wind and 60 GW from Hydroelectric power.
• During the webinar R K Singh launched two reports titled ‘Renewable Power Pathways: Modelling the
Integration of Wind and Solar in India by 2030’ and ‘Bending the Curve: 2025 Forecasts for Electricity
Demand by Sector and State in the Light of the COVID Epidemic’ prepared by the Energy Transitions
Commission (ETC) India.
• ETC India is a research platform based at the headquarters of TERI – The Energy and Resources
Institute, New Delhi.
National Award of Excellence for Outstanding Research in Forestry
from ICFRE
• Kannan CS Warrier, Senior Principal Scientist at the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB)
received the 2019 National Award of Excellence for Outstanding Research in Forestry from the Indian Council of

Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE).
• The National Award was given to Kannan CS Warrier for releasing three productive clones of Casuarina
equisetifolia, first of its kind in India that are suitable for salt affected (sodic) soils.
• The clones developed by Kannan are expected to boost the agro forestry initiatives of ICFRE and offer a potential
solution to the sea erosion in the coast of Kerala.
• Kannan collaborated with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Australia for
infusing the germplasm of Casuarina equisetifolia, for broadening the genetic base of the species in India.

GEDCOL and NHPC signed MoU to develop floating solar power projects in
Odisha
• The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) signed a Memorandum of

Understanding (MoU) through video conference with The Green Energy
Corporation of Odisha Limited (GEDCOL) to develop floating solar power projects
with a total capacity of 500 Megawatts (MW) in the state of Odisha. The first
phase work of the project starts by March, 2022.

DRDO establishes COVID-19 testing facility in DIHAR, Leh
• The Defence Research Development Organization has established a COVID-19 testing facility in Leh.

The research facility was set up at Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR).
• The facility will identify COVID-19 cases in the union territory of Ladakh. The facility is capable
screening 50 samples a day. The testing facility was inaugurated by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor R K
Mathur.
• DIHAR – DIHAR laboratories is working on cold agro-animal technologies. It is currently screening and
identifying medicinal and aromatic plants to use them for defense purposes. Also, the laboratory is
working on Greenhouse technologies for high altitude and cold desert areas.
• The DIHAR was established in 1962 in the name of Field Research Laboratory. It was renamed as
DIHAR in 2008. The main aim of DIHAR was to make the hostile terrain of cold arid desert of Ladakh
reasonably green.

ASTHROS Mission: Football Stadium sized balloons of NASA to study
Cosmos
• NASA is to launch ASTHROS Mission from Antarctica in December 2023. The mission is to spend

three weeks observing air currents above the continent.
• The ASTHROS Mission will send a football stadium sized balloons into the stratosphere. The
balloon will observe wavelengths of invisible light from the earth. The balloon has a telescope, sub
systems, science instruments, electronic systems and cooling system.
• About the Mission – The Mission will find answers about unsolved puzzles of giant stars and
their formation in the Milky Way Galaxy. The mission for the first time will detect and map the
presence of two specific types of nitrogen ions. These ions will help to reveal places where winds
from supernova explosions massive stars helped to reshape the gas clouds.

Pi approximation day 2020 => July 22
• Pi approximation day is observed annually on July 22. It is dedicated to the mathematical constant pi (π).

• The day is also called Casual Pi Day.
• Related days :
➢ Pi day – Also known as International Day of Mathematics is observed on March 14 every year. The date
has been selected because the first three digits of the date(March 14 (3/14 or 3-14)) and also
correspond to the first three digits of Pi – 3.14.
➢ Two Pi Day – It is also known as Tau Day for the mathematical constant tau (τ), is observed on June 28.
• The use of the symbol of Pi was popularized by Leonhard Euler, who adopted it in 1737.
• Georges Buffon, an 18th-century French mathematician, invented a way to calculate π based on probability.
Kargil Vijay Diwas => July 26
• On July 26, 2020, India marked Kargil Vijay Diwas. The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tribute at
National War Memorial. The day marks India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil war.

• On July 26, 1999, Indian Government culminated “Operation Vijay” and declared victory after three-month
long battle in Kargil.
• Kargil War – The Kargil War is an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place along Line of
Control. India used its air power on a large scale for the first time in Kargil war after India-Pakistan War in
1971. Kargil is located very close to Line of Control.
• Operation Vijay – The operation was launched by the Indian Army twice in Indian history. The first Operation
Vijay was launched in 1961 that led to the capture of Goa, Anjediva islands and Daman and Diu. The second
operation was launched in 1999. Both the operations were of huge success. However, the Kargil Vijay Diwas
is marked on the culmination of Kargil war.
• Operation White Sea – The operation White Sea was also launched during Kargil war, 1999. During the
operation, Indian Air Force jointly acted with India Army to flush out regular and irregular troops of the
Pakistani army.
