and Sediment Transport

Highway/Roadway Drainage System Design

Part 1: Introduction – Course Objective

Highway/roadway storm drainage design

shall provide for safe passage of vehicles
during the design storm event by:

1. Interception of pavement and offsite

flows at appropriate locations

2. Storage and/or conveyance of flows

3. Exit of flows at existing/historical

outfalls

Highway/Roadway Drainage System Design

Part 1: Introduction – Design Approach

1. Data collection/review

2. Agencies’ coordination

3. Preliminary drainage concept design

4. Drainage concept refinement

5. Final drainage design

6. Special Considerations

Highway/Roadway Drainage System Design

Part 1: Introduction – Data Collection/Review

1. Hydrologic maps: drainage areas, soils and land use

2. Flooding history including high water marks

3. As-built or design plans of existing drainage system,

conflicting utilities and rights of way.

4. Drainage reports and hydrologic/hydraulic models

of existing drainage system

5. Local municipal, provincial and federal regulations

Highway/Roadway Drainage System Design

Part 1: Introduction – Preliminary Drainage Concept
1. Preliminary roadway plan-profile over topographic map
supplemented with utilities and drainage areas

2. Concept drainage plan components:

- Pavement shoulders and side ditches for rural roads

- Gutters/curbs, inlets and storm drains for urban roads

- Detention/retention basins

- Bridges and/or culverts and major channels

- Special/unique considerations

Highway/Roadway Drainage System Design

Part 1: Introduction – Special Considerations
Special Considerations at Concept Design Level:
1. Avoid deep cuts/fills

2. Avoid significant utilities

3. Avoid environmentally sensitive areas

4. Consider construction sequencing

5. Consider traffic control

6. Consider community acceptability
