THE 4 STAGES OF VOCABULARY

LEARNING

1st Stage-Unconscious, Incompetent

I've never heard/seen the word, and I don't know what it means

2nd Stage-Conscious, Incompetent

I've heard/seen the word but I don't know what it means

3rd Stage-Conscious, Competent

I've heard/seen the word, know what it means but I don't feel
really comfortable using it

4th Stage-Unconscious, Competent

I've heard/seen the word, know what it means and I feel really
comfortable using it

Note: We know from vocabulary research that it takes multiple exposures across many contexts before we really start
to "know" a word.

One study conducted by literacy researchers Becky, Perfetti, and McKeown found that we need 12 exposures to a
word before there's a difference in our comprehension of a passage containing the word.

So Ask Yourself: What stage are you with each of the words you are currently
learning? How can you get to stage 4 in the most effective, efficient, and fun way?
