The

Nokia N8 is a Symbian^3 smartphone from the Nokia Nseries. Featuring Carl Zeiss

optics and xenon flash, the N8 is the first Nokiacamera phone to utilize a 12 megapixel camera
sensor size of 1/1.83″, making it the largest image sensor in a camera phone at the time of its launch.
[5][6]
The N8 display features a 3.5-inch (89 mm) 360 x 640 pixel color touchscreen, and is the first
Nokia smartphone to run on the Symbian^3 operating system with single-tap interaction, featuring the
addition of multiple home screens, customization abilities, and multi-touch capabilities
with gesture support. Among its connectivity features are HDMI out, USB On-The-Go and Wi-
Fi 802.11 b/g/n support; the N8 is also the first device to feature a Pentaband 3.5G radio.[7]

The Nokia N8 smartphone was made available at the official Nokia Online Store on September 23,
2010 and was released in select markets on October 1, 2010.[8] The N8 became the product with the
most customer pre-orders in Nokia's history up to the point of its release.[9]

[edit]History

The previous phone in the Nseries was the N97, which was criticized for its earlier firmware issues.
Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's Executive Vice President for Markets, said in an interview that software quality
control would be better than for the N97.[10] ia phone with a focus on photography is the N86 8MP,
which has an 8 Megapixel sensor and has been available since June 2009.[11]

The N8 is the second Nokia to have a capacitive touchscreen, following the X6, and the first with
multi-touch.[12]

[edit]Software

[edit]Software platform and user interface

The N8 will be the first device by Nokia with the Symbian^3 operating system. Symbian^3 was
scheduled for the second quarter of 2010 but was pushed back to the third quarter.[22]Symbian^3
supports three home screens, each with up to six widgets that the user can customize. This new
operating system has provided streamlined menus and also support for HD recording.[23] As with older
versions of Symbian, multitasking is supported.[24] Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's Executive Vice President for
Markets, said in an interview that quality control will be better than for the N97.[10] There is a greater
emphasis on the user interface and easier user-controls with Symbian^3 (such as consistency
between menus, a commonly criticised factor of Symbian^1 devices).

Contrary to rumours,[25] future Nseries devices have a strong possibility to be coupled

with Symbian platform, specifically, Symbian^4.[26] Other software that will work on this mobile phone

[edit]Promotion

To highlight the capabilities of the Nokia N8 camera, Nokia created a short film, The Commuter, in
October 2010. Directed by the McHenry brothers and starring Dev Patel, Ed Westwick, Charles
Dance and Pamela Anderson, the seven-minute film was shot entirely on the phone's 720p camera.
For the Spanish promotion of the phone they also created a short video featuring luminescent
puppets, called Love Knot.

The phone was also used to film Drums of Death's "Won't Be Long" music video.

Using CellScope technology, Nokia also released another film called "Dot" which they marketed to
as the world's smallest stop-motion animation character.

The device also appeared on the popular Showtime TV show, "Dexter"[33] as well as on the film,
"TRON: Legacy".[34]

In Asian countries, it was promoted differently through the fictional character Pier Roxas on Nokia's
Project Gener8. He also appeared on a Philippine talk show Startalk to promote the device.[35]

[edit]Reports of device failure

On November 17, several mobile technology websites published articles amid emergent claims from
people globally who have informed of their Nokia N8 smartphone turning itself off and ultimately failing
to turn back on.[36]

On November 18, Nokia confirmed that a small number of its N8 smartphones are experiencing power
problems. Niklas Savander, Nokia's executive vice president, said in a video interview posted on the
company's blog through Nokia's customer care; "We have heard that a limited number of Nokia N8
customers are experiencing problems powering the device on". "We have traced it down to the way
we assemble the engines", Savander continued. "We have, as a precautionary measure, taken
immediate action across the product line." Savander did not provide details about what that action
entailed, and said the issue was not tied to one particular region.[37]
"The power problems are covered by Nokia's standard warranty, so those experiencing issues can get
the problem fixed by contacting customer care", he added.[38] Savander said the problem is not
widespread. "If you look at the total number of N8's we have shipped, it is a small number," he said.
"However, for the one individual where it's not working, it is, of course, a significant issue. Most
consumers are loving their N8's, but we need to make sure that these limited instances get fixed as
well".[37]
