News & Events Monitoring Caltrans Work on Highway 101

On March 23rd, Channelkeeper submitted
Monitoring Caltrans on
written comments to the California Department
Highway 101
of Transportation regarding a draft
Environmental Impact Report for the Linden to
Marine Protected Areas Update Casitas Pass Highway 101 Project. The project
has the potential to significantly impact the
Earth Day Clean-up and water quality and ecology of Franklin and
Festival! Carpinteria Creeks as well as the Carpinteria
Salt Marsh. In our comments, Channelkeeper
identified multiple deficiencies in the
Student Art Show on Display environmental document. In particular,
Channelkeeper requested more detailed information regarding Best Management
Blue Water Ball Practices (BMPs) that will be implemented to mitigate short term and long term
water quality impacts from the project. As evidence that this information needed
to be provided, Channelkeeper submitted water quality data, photographs, and
Help Us Greet the Grunion! other documentation collected while monitoring the current Milpas Street to Hot
Springs Road project.
Stream Team - April 4th & 5th
From December through February, Channelkeeper repeatedly documented
discharges of contaminated water from the construction site to the Andree Clark

Quality Control Board. It is our intention to help ensure that future construction
projects along Highway 101 do not cause water quality impacts.

Marine Protected Areas Update

Did You Know?
California's initiative to establish a network of
protected underwater wilderness areas, also
known as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), in
state waters has begun its second of three
rounds through the development of
alternative MPA proposals. These proposals
map out suggested areas of Southern
California to be considered as safe havens for
marine life. This process is mandated by the
Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA).

In the first round, six alternative MPA proposals were generated by the South
Coast Regional Stakeholder Group (SCRSG), a group appointed to represent the
diversity of stakeholder interests in Southern California's ocean and coasts,
including interests in recreational and commercial fishing, local municipalities,
industries, conservation, education and ocean related businesses.

To encourage public input in the MLPA Initiative process, the public was also
invited to submit its own ideas as to what areas of Southern California should be
considered for protection. Three of these external proposals were submitted, two
Earth Day is of which were proposals from organized fishing interests. Recognizing the need to
provide a starting point in this first round that prioritized the conservation goals

submission of the third proposal. This proposal identifies important areas to be
considered for protection based on natural reserve design science, place-based

Task Force Meeting on April 15th and 16th in Dana Point where all nine proposals

"What the Channel Means to Me" Student Art

Show On Display
This is the sixth year that Channelkeeper
has produced the juried student art show
"What the Channel Means to Me." The
show features a wide range of creative
expression, from ceramics and oil
paintings to jewelry, but all the work
focuses on celebrating our coast and
ocean.

If you missed the artist reception and

awards ceremony, you still have a chance
to see the show at East West Gallery,
located downstairs from the
Channelkeeper office, at 714 Bond Avenue this Thursday, April 2nd, from 4 -7
pm. One day only!

This year's juror was local artist Michael Drury who selected the show of 52
pieces from 260 entries. Work was judged on the following criteria: creativity,
technical skill, sense of style and interpretation of the theme.

Art show sponsors were Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, Trillium Enterprises, Inc.
and Montecito Frame and Gallery. With their generous support, it is our aim to
both reward and enable these young artists to develop their talents and continue
to inspire others to care for the marine environment through their art.

First place went to Spencer Taylor from San Marcos High School (see his piece,
"Super Grouper", shown above). For a complete list of winners and more pictures,
please visit our website.

Help Us Greet the Grunion!

It's that time of year again! Those elusive, slithery
silver fish will be visiting local beaches, and we want
YOU to help greet them. Join Channelkeeper on
Wednesday, April 15th from 6:00 - 8:30 pm at the
Marine Science Auditorium at UCSB for the 2009
Grunion Greeter Workshop. Be one of the fortunate
few to observe the unique nocturnal habits of our
faithful friend, the grunion. You can contribute to
science by documenting grunion runs throughout the
season. Learn about the grunion life cycle and how
you can become an official Grunion Greeter, and sign
up for a shift at the workshop. For more

quality monitoring program. Every month, volunteers join
Channelkeeper staff to test for common water quality
parameters at numerous different sites in the Ventura
River and Goleta Slough watersheds. Come join us to help
protect our local waterways; we will be testing in Ventura
on Saturday, April 4th and in Goleta on Sunday, April 5th.
