PROBLEM SET 2
Instructions:
1. Answer the problem set in yellow paper (8.5 in x 13 in)
2. Use only a blue or black ink pen.
3. Make sure to have written your name and section on every answer sheet, as well as
consecutive sheet numbers.
4. Start the solution to each problem on a new sheet; do NOT write at the back; and put a
box on your final answer/s.
5. Show clearly all pertinent solutions and state the assumptions made, if any. Avoid
rounding off in the middle of your solution.
Deadline:
Determine:
a. The reactions at A and C
b. The angle of twist at B (with respect to the fixed end A)
c. The maximum shear stress along the shaft
PROBLEM 3
A steel pipe of 100-mm diameter is to support the loading shown. Knowing that the
stock of pipes available has thicknesses varying from 6 mm to 24 mm in 3-mm
increments, and that the allowable normal stress (tension and compression) for the
steel used is 150 MPa, determine the minimum wall thickness t that can be used.
If the allowable tensile and compressive stress for the material are different such that
the allowable tensile stress is greater than the allowable compressive stress, which
stress limit will be used for design? Explain.
Problem 4
Given the loaded beam below, determine:
a. The maximum shear stress at section C
b. The maximum shear stress in the whole beam
Problem 5
The gas storage tank is fabricated by bolting together two half cylindrical thin shells and
two hemispherical shells as shown. The tank and the 25 mm diameter bolts are made
from material having an allowable normal stress of 150 MPa and 250 MPa, respectively.
The tank has an inner diameter of 4 m.
