Communication

Communication is part of all living beings. Particularly, it


plays a vital role in human life. Our age is rightly called
an age of ‘information technology’ which is largely
dependent on the business of communication.
Communication is a symbolic, interpretative,
transactional, contextual process in which people
create ‘shared meanings’.
It is a meaning-making and meaning-sharing or
exchanging process.
Meaning of Communication

Meaning
 To communicate means ‘to share’ or ‘exchange’
ideas, thoughts or any kind of verbal or non-verbal
messages between two individuals or groups
successfully. The word ‘communication’ is derived
from the Latin word ‘communicare’ which means
‘to share’.
 Technically speaking it is process of encoding and
decoding the messages that are commonly
accepted by the user groups. Communication is
thus a network of interactions between sender and
receiver.
Scope and importance of
communication

 Communication is the major area of specialization


of modern corporate world. The importance of
communication is felt greater in the modern period
than in any other age in the past. As the technology
developed over the years, making communication
sophisticated and complex, the research in this field
was given greater importance. Today, the
corporate world spends more than 75% of its time on
communication. New employment avenues have
been opened up for thousands of youth with the
coming of BPOs along with IT sector. A successful
communicator is considered as the great success in
this world. Many people have taken this field of
knowledge for making their career a success.
Modes of communication

 Verbal (Oral and Written) and


 Non-verbal communication (Body Language)
 Human communication takes place at two levels–
verbal and non-verbal. Verbal communication
includes use of written or oral language whereas
non-verbal communication deals with use of body
language including gestures, postures, signs etc.
Barriers to Communication

 Lack of Common frame of reference


 Poor retention
 Lack of interest on the part of listener as well as speaker
 Poor listening
 Pre-judgement
 Generation gap
 Difference in perception
 Strong emotions
 Self-centeredness
 Technology and communication gap
