LOOKING AT COMMUNITIES

LESSON ONE: PEOPLE IN COMMUNITIES

A community is a place where people live, work, and play. People who live in a community depend upon each other in many ways.

NEVADA CITY. A GHOST TOWN

Have you ever visited a ghost town? A GHOST TOWN is a place where people once lived but don´t live anymore. Nevada City, Montana, is a ghost

city. The town has some buildings and houses, but people don´t live there. Nevada City is empty now.

Visitors like to visit Nevada City. Pretend you are one of them. It is hot, and the sun shines brightly. You would like a cool drink. But you cannot buy

this thing in Nevada City. No grocery store is open there. No restaurant. There are no people living in Nevada City.
Without people, Nevada City is no longer a community.

This picture shows a typical house of Nevada City.

Long ago, Nevada City was a busy mining town, now it is a ghost town, because people no longer live there.

PEOPLE MEET THEIR NEEDS IN COMMUNITIES

You are happy to live in your community. People are all around. People in stores are selling food, clothes, and other kinds of goods. You can find what

you need in your community. If you play ball and break a window, you may call a worker from the community to replace the glass.
3

People depend upon the construction workers to build houses and apartment buildings. People need places to live. Your community has a special place

where you can go to learn new things- your school. Your teachers and principal are an important part of your community.

When you are ill, your community has people who can help you become well again. You go to a hospital, and doctors and nurses in your community give

you the care you need.

Police Officers and firefighters are also ready to help you. These workers keep you safe. Your community needs rules. The leaders make rules for

your community. They see that parks, streets, traffic lights are kept clean and repaired. People in your community also get together to share good

times and holidays.

PEOPLE IN COMMUNITIES HELP EACH OTHER

Early in the history, people moved from one part of the country to another. They started some communities When they came to towns, the first

thing their families needed was a house. They chopped down trees and cut logs. All the people in the community helped each other to build new

houses. Women cooked food for all. When the house was finished, the people has a party. They danced and sang. The family slept in a new house that

was built by the people from the community.

5

Just like people long ago, people in communities today also help each other.

When a flood or terrible storm hits, some families may have to leave their homes. People in the community provide meals and places for these people

to stay. Sometimes people know a person with a special need. Members of the community can helped collect money to buy a medicine or to pay for a

medical treatment this person needs.

If you watch news programs on television, you can see the examples of people in communities helping each other.
