This plan establishes guidelines for the proper storage, handling, and disposal of
flammable/combustible and potentially hazardous wastes generated by the Project site during the
course of Construction. The purpose of this document is to define the philosophy of the waste
management, and general compliance in accordance with SPCB/CPCB Environment Protection Act
1986 and Hazardous Waste management Regulations;
Hazardous Wastes (Management, Handling and Transboundary) Rules, 2008, brought out
a guide for manufacture, storage and import of hazardous chemicals and for management
of hazardous wastes.
Biomedical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998, were formulated along
parallel lines, for proper disposal, segregation, transport, etc., of infectious wastes.
Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, aim at enabling
municipalities to dispose municipal solid waste in a scientific manner.
2. PROJECT AIM
IEIL-Ion Exchange India Limited ; we are committed to implement the project environment plan and
waste management plan so that it is effective, accurate and economical and ensure that the procedures
put into place are working and are maintained.
3. MANAGEMENT
The Site Manager, HSE Manager and HSE Environmental Coordinator of the project and as such is
responsible for ensuring the instruction of the workers, implementation and overseeing of the waste
management program. Site Manager, HSE Manager and HSE Environmental Coordinator will monitor the
effectiveness and accuracy during the routine site visits. Independent audits will also be completed by
our safety personnel via site inspection. Copies of this report are forwarded to the HSE Department for
monitoring.
The Site Manager, HSE Manager and HSE Environmental Coordinator will provide onsite briefing
via induction or orientation of appropriate separation, handling, recycling, reuse and return
methods to be used by all parties and at appropriate stages of the project were applicable.
Toolbox Talks will be carried out regularly on waste issues. This will ensure that everyone feels
they are included and that their participation is meaningful.
5. RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1 The designated HSE Manager, HSE supervisor and Site supervisor will construct the
flammable, combustible liquid and hazardous waste collection storage area according to applicable
standards set forth.
Doc No.
G225IEX-SRP-R-PLN-0003
5.2 Project HSE Manager, HSE supervisor and Site supervisor in charge have the responsibility to
ensure that all flammable and combustible liquids on the project are appropriately stored and
all project-generated hazardous waste is taken to the hazardous waste collection drum for
pickup and disposal.
5.3 IEIL HSE Department will supervise and monitor the program and coordinate with the existing
facility Project for pickup and disposal of hazardous waste and municipal waste.
6. APPLICABILITY
This general instruction is applicable to all forms of waste including process wastes, clinically wastes
and general site trash. Additionally, it will apply to those materials that may be recycled / reused rather
than being disposed.
7. DEFINITIONS
Waste Classification (quoted from Hazardous waste management Regulations)
Hazardous Waste: These are defined as any solid, semi-solid, liquid, or contained gaseous waste,
or combination of such wastes, which may because of its quantity, concentration, physical or
characteristics pose a hazard or potential hazard to human health or the environmental when
improperly treated, stored, transported, disposed of otherwise managed. These wastes shall
include chemicals identified as discarded commercial chemical products, off-specification
products/chemicals, containers, residues.
G225IEX-SRP-R-PLN-0003
Welding Stubs:
Welding Stubs or remaining of welding rods to be collected into a separate container.
The same will be kept in a designated place in fabrication area for further disposal.
Iron Scrap:
Proactive measures to be taken for reducing scrap generation. Whenever the iron scrap
are generated, they are temporarily stored in an identified area within barricade to avoid
any unsafe occurrences and transferred to scrap dealer time to time for recycling.
Insulation Material
Proactive measure to be taken for reducing scrap generation. Whenever the insulation
scrap generated, they are temporarily stored in an identified area within, barricade and
transferred to scrap dealer time to time.
Waste paint:
Reusable drums used for storage of waste paint. Before collection drums are checked for
their integrity to avoid any leakage/spillage during storage. The drums are marked as
"WASTE PAINT DRUM" and after collection of waste paint shifted to the designated area for
storage of waste paint. While collection drums are placed on metallic trays to prevent any
soil contamination. In storage area "NO SMOKING" marking shall be displayed and fire
extinguisher shall be placed.
The storage of different types of wastes identified as above can be done by: Storage of
Spent Oil:
Spent Oil drums are placed vertically with lids closed. No stacking of one drum on other
is allowed for storing spent oil
The Storage areas are concreted in a seepage proof manner and provided with 100%
containment facilities. To collect any oil leaked/spilled from these drums "Collection Pit"
shall be made within containment. Slopes shall be so maintained that the leaked/spilled oil
gets deposited in the Collection Pit.
In case of spill/leak immediately saw dust shall be spread on these areas as per
Procedure for the Spillage Control. In the Storage area "NO SMOKING" marking shall be
displayed and fire extinguisher shall be placed.
Whenever possible, vehicles will be washed on an impermeable surface in a
maintenance area, and runoff directed through a drain which contain an oil trap

Quantity of generation of Spent Oil and Oil Containing filters shall be maintained in form
3 of Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989.
Storage of Oily Cotton Wastes/Oily filters:
The Storage areas shall be concreted with adequate containment. The frequency of
disposal of Oily cotton wastes/Oily filters shall be at least once in a week. The areas shall
have "NO SMOKING" or "INFLAMMABLE" marking and fire extinguisher provision shall be
made.
Waste Battery storage areas shall be acids proof to prevent any soil contamination
because of acid leak/spill from the waste batteries. Empty chemical drums are also
stored within
Containment and while provisioning for the storage facility; the precautions shall be
taken based on the characteristics/precautions mentioned in the MSDS of those
chemicals.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of the chemicals are maintained in the areas where
the chemicals are stored as well as used.
All the Storage areas are identified by name and nature of Material being stored. All the
storage areas of Wastes are inspected once in fortnight to ensure no leakage is taking
place.
Nonferrous metal scrap like copper & aluminium is generated from cable cuttings &
earth strips. The same will be segregated properly and be kept in their designated place
for disposal to the vendor for recycling time to time.
8. REFERENCES
As per SPCB/CPCB or Environment Protection Act 1986 and Hazardous Waste management
Regulations (2008, 1998, 2000);
9. SEGREGATION
A specific area shall be laid out and labelled to facilitate the separation of materials for potential
recycling, salvage, reuse and return. Recycling and waste bins are to be kept clean and clearly
mark in order to avoid contamination of materials. The labelling system shall be the waste
awareness colour coding scheme. If the skips are clearly identified the bulk of the workforce will
deposit the correct materials into the correct skip.

The CAIRN does not require approval of the classification, but upon inspection can challenge a
classification if a technical justification can be presented, and does have the final authority for
determining a waste classification.
Additionally, it is a regulatory requirement that all vehicles transporting industrial wastes must
carry manifest approved by CAIRN e.g. Waste Disposal Permit and co-signed by transporter. This
manifest will be endorse by the receiving disposal facility and returned to the generator with the
invoice.
All written information related and invoices to any shipments shall be forwarded to the HSE
Environmental Coordinator for record keeping and complete required reports to be sent to the
client
