Types and Uses of Cleaning Equipment, materials and supplies

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Define different learning equipment, materials and supplies.
2. Identify the types of cleaning equipment, materials and supplies.
3. Identify the uses of each cleaning equipment, materials and supplies.

Good housekeeping requires very thorough cleaning. Being clean means the
absence of visible dirt. Some critical areas should not only be cleaned, they
have to be sanitized. By sanitizing, all germs and bacteria are killed through
the use of sanitizing chemicals such as disinfectants or by hot steam as used
in dishwashing and laundry. With a sanitized environment, houseguest and
occupants are protected from possible diseases. The critical areas that must be
sanitized are those that come into direct contact with the body such as toilets,
toilet bowls, urinals and lavatories. It also includes amenities like towels, linen
used for beddings, glasses and table wares.

For a thorough cleaning, the hotel, lodging house or any building must be
equipped with appropriate cleaning and sanitizing equipment, For a thorough
cleaning, the hotel, lodging house or any establishment must not only be
equipped with cleaning and sanitizing equipment but with cleaning tools,
materials and supplies as well.

Broom
A cleaning implement for seeing made of bundle of straws or twigs attached to
a long handle
Dustpan
A cleaning tool commonly used to scoop the dirt and wastes on the floor

Vacuum cleaner
A device that uses an air pump to create a partial vacuum to suck up dust and
dirt

Water Hoses
Hollow tubes designed to carry fluids from one location to another

Bucket
A watertight, vertical cylinder or truncated cone, with an open top and a flat
botoom
Cobwebber
Used for reaching and sweeping of floor without a stool

Sponge
Characterized by readily absorbing water and becoming soft when wet while
retaining toughness

Dishcloth
Used in the kitchen to dry dishes and other surfaces
Cleaning cloth
Used to wipe the cleaning tools and equipment

Electric floor polisher


Electrical appliance that is used to clean and maintain non-carpeted floors

Cleaning detergent
Surfactant or a mixture of surfactants with “cleaning properties in diluted
solutions that is also used in cleaning purposes

Liquid detergent
Detergent in liquid form used for cleaning tools and equipment

Scrubbing foam
Used to remove the contaminants of any tool and equipment

Paper towel
Absorbent textile made from paper instead of cloth used in drying hands,
wiping windows, dusting and cleaning up soils

Water
Liquid used for cleaning most if the tools and equipment. UNIVERSAL
SOLVENT

Waste container
Container for temporarily strong refuse and waste
Baking soda
Otherwise known as bicarbonate of soda or sodium bicarbonate is used to
deodorize refrigerators

Glove
A garment that covers the whole hand of a person that performs household
services

Trolley
A transport vehicle used in housekeeping to move supplies from room to room
A Carpet Sweeper is a mechanical device for the cleaning of carpets. They
were popular before the introduction of the vacuum cleaner and have been
largely superseded by them. However, they continue to be used in many home
and commercial applications because they are lightweight and quiet, enabling
users to quickly clean small messes up from the floor without disturbing
patrons, patients, babies and pets

A Mop (such as a floor mop) is a mass or bundle of coarse strings or yarn,


etc., or a piece of cloth, sponge, or other absorbent material, attached to a pole
or stick. It is used to soak up liquid, for cleaning floors and other surfaces, to
mop up dust, or for other cleaning purposes.
