Description
Students listen to a short story with flashcards, tally the pets mentioned in the story, graph the results, and identify the
most and least common pet.

• Let the children know they must look at the flash cards that appear to identify the pets. Often there will be more than
one pet per sentence.
• Introduce the flashcards to the students prior to the story.
• Read the story holding up the flashcard for the pet, as you say the name.

I am going to read you a story. I would like you to listen carefully and look for the pets that appear in the story. You will
need to tally all the pets that Jake sees in this story.
The Pets Jake saw
One day as Jake was going to school he saw lots of pets in the houses he walked past.
He saw:

Mrs Johnson feeding her cat.


Mr Evans walking his puppy.
Mrs Clark talking with her two budgies (show picture twice).
Rosa playing with her rat.
Ms Andrews' cat sneaking up on her budgie (show both pictures).
Chloe's puppy chasing a ball.

Dr Stone's two cats (show picture twice) sitting, looking around.
Mrs Davis dropping bits of lettuce for her rat.
Sylvia pulling her puppy out of a blackberry bush.
Mr Honore's cat slinking around the car.
Mrs Moffett's two puppies (show picture twice) going for a run.
Tamatea's pet spider staring at his sister's cat. (show both pictures).
