Book review
Train to Pakistan
Khushwant Singh’s Train to Pakistan highlights the futility of blaming each other for the
unfortunate event. it differs from the most of the novels on the partition in respect of canvas and
unity of time, place and action. It has greater unity of time and place, it action centers in the
vicinity of Mano Majra and it covers a period of not more than a month. Perhaps this is an
important factor that enables Khushwant Singh to transform the horrendous raw theme into a fine
fiction that is steeped in human compassion and love.
The story basically revolves around a village located
along the borders, named Mano Majra. The story begins with a vivid description of how the
village was like. It is followed by a dramatic incident that took place there one night. Ram Lal,
the village money lender was killed by a neighbouring village’s dacoit, Malli. Now the story
shifts to its main characters Juggut Singh, Iqbal and Hukum Chand. Juggut Singh is arrested as
murder suspect by the police. He is portrayed as local badmaash of the village who loves only
daughter of mulla of the village named as Nooran. On the other side, Iqbal, a social reformer, is a
visiting commie in disguise who wants to mobilize support for the socialist party of India. Then
we come across the character of Hukum Chand who is the village magistrate.

. The village is portrayed to be a peaceful place until the seeds of hatred and suspicion were
sown . The story can be viewed from different angles. If it was a love story between a Sikh boy
and Muslim girl, it was also a story that depicted the brutalities suffered by the people generated
as a result of partition. Not just this, it also tried to show how people viewed famous
personalities like Mahatma Gandhi in some way or the other. The bravery of Juggat Singh is
brought about in the story, when he attempted to save several innocent lives and his lady-love,
Nooran too. The crisis began when the horrifying train with corpses entered the village.
Moreover the brutally mutilated bodies evoked the furies and drove the Hindus of Mano Majro
to shoo away the Muslims who were till then their good friends and kin-like. Various situations
that lead to one incident from another and the author weaves a heart-wrenching story in the
backdrop of Partition.
The story by Khushwant Singh even being a work of fiction is very close to reality in terms of
the scenes that are created. The story has a tone that is quite depressing and touches the core of
the heart.

“LITERATURE IS BORNE OUT OF A SOCIAL MILIEU. A READER CANNOT

AFFORD TO OVERLOOK THE SOCIAL BINDINGS, CUSTOMARY FACTORS AND
THE HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS OF THE RESPECTIVE AGE WHICH SHAPES
LITERARY WORK OF ART.”

Literature is the foundation of life. It is a feeling or expression that one can express on a piece of paper.
Literature enables people to see through the lenses of others, and sometimes even inanimate
objects, therefore, it becomes a looking glass into the world as others view it. It is a journey that is
inscribed in pages, and powered by the imagination of the reader.

Purpose of literature is to turn blood into ink. Literature is used as

a weapon by the authors and With the help of literature author/ poet tries to convert their emotions
into reality. Ultimately, literature has provided a gateway to teach the reader about life experiences
from even the saddest stories to the most joyful ones that will touch their hearts.

“dukh” is a short hindi story written by yashpal. Dilip is nucleus character of the story and whole story
revolve around him. In the beginning of the story dilip is sad because his wife left him and went to her
mother’s home. He was depressed and started feeling lonely so he decided to take a walk around the
street and When he was roaming around the streets he saw a chapman sitting in a polar climate. He was
shivering badly and this seek the attention of dilip towards him. Seeing the poor condition of a bloke
dilip decided to buy all his food item which worth 8 paisa but as dilip want to have a conversation with
him so he gave him 1 rupee. Dilip want to see her home so he asked the bloke to accompany him. As he
reached the home of the bloke he was shocked to see the poverty in which the family of bloke is living.
He can feel their pain there he understand the real meaning of pain and helplessness and realized that
his pain is only a water drop as compare to sea. And return back to his home. The last dialogue of the
story is most heart touching in which dilip while responding to the letter of his wife says “ kaash, tum
jaante dukh kise kehte hai, tumhara ye raseela dukh tumhe na mile to tumhare zindgi kitne dubhar ho
jaate hai.” This dialogue shows the mental condition of author that after observing the pain of the other
people he got enlighten and now feel that pain is a part of life and if this sweet part is absent from your
life then your life will be bitter.

In this story there is a dialogue which portrayed the idea of social relationship- “ manushy- manushy me
kitna bhaid hota hai parantu manushyatav ek cheez hai jo kabhi- kabhi bhaid ki sab deeware laangh
jaata hai”. With this author conveys the idea that there is no relation superior to humanity and humanity
is not bound by any caste or class barriers. Their exist a deep relationship between all human being which
cannot be described by any words. This story also convey the idea that literature is what a person
observes and feel about the society, his personal thoughts , opinions are enshrined in his story and this
makes a literature.
