Aim- To investigate the effects of household appliances on an individual’s electricity bill.

Variables

 Independent- the different appliances, and the scores

 Dependent- certain items being used which makes electric bill high/low
 Control- Ruler, paper, pencil, electricity bill

Materials

 Aquarium
 Clock Radio
 Computer (asleep)
 Computer (not asleep)
 Cellphone Charger
 Television
 Curling Iron
 DVD Player
 Hair Dryer
 Lamp
 Mp3 Player Charger
 Video Game
 Pencil
 Paper
 Ruler
 Calculator

Method-

1. Gather materials
2. Monitor the use of the appliances (Aquarium,
Clock Radio, Computer (asleep), Computer (not asleep), Cellphone Charger, Television,
Curling Iron DVD Player, Hair Dryer, Lamp, Mp3 Player Charger ,Video Game ) for a year.
3. Place results in a chart
4. Place the top 4 appliances which use the most electricity in a bar graph.
5. Create recommendations and analyze results.
Results-

Discussion-

 What is electricity?

Electricity is a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as
electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current.

 Why is electricity important?

Electricity is important because it is versatile, controlled easily and is used in everyone's daily
life. Without electricity, humans would have to use other forms of energy that are less efficient.

 Why it is important to conserve electricity?

There are two main reasons why conserving energy is important on a global level and each can
impact your life dramatically.

1. Fossil Fuel Consumption

Many types of energy use fossil fuels in some way. Fossil fuels are a nonrenewable resource,
meaning that at some point the very last chunk of coal will be dug from the earth and the last
drop of oil will be pumped from the Earth. When this happens there won't be any more fossil
fuel available, since mankind can't create these resources.

2. Environmental Protection

The other reason for conserving energy is the health and well-being of every life form on the
entire planet. Using fossil fuels and some other energy forms typically pollute the environment
in a number of ways.

 How to conserve electricity

1. Fix/update lighting
2. Unplug appliances when aren’t in use
3. Adjust heating and cooling in your home.
4. Use renewable energy
 Discussing results

From the results I analyzed that the appliances which were constantly on/ using current had a
higher score than those which were on less time. Also appliances which created heat or charges
something use a lot of electricity in the short times powered. This is to show that the
conversion to electricity to heat is a long or difficult procedure because it uses a lot of
electricity. Finally the top four appliances score was so high because the appliances where using
electricity constant even though some of them was on sleep mode and that they produce heat
and sufficient items/ services.

 Conclusion

In conclusion the results showed after analyzing them that the appliances which were
constantly on/ using current had a higher score than those which were on less time. Which
shows that the aim “To investigate the effects of household appliances on an individual’s
electricity bill” was accomplished. The four main appliances which had the highest scores were
so because the appliances where using electricity constant even though some of them was on
sleep mode and appliances which uses electricity to create heat or sufficient items/ services use
a lot more electricity than those who don’t.
