Few more Example Problems on Triple Integrals

Example 1
Solution.
We rewrite the equation of the plane 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝑧 = 6 in the
form:
𝑥 𝑦 𝑧
3𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝑧 = 6, ⇒ + + = 1,
2 3 6
The solid region of integration U is shown in Figure 3.

The limits of integrations for 𝑧 range from

𝑧 = 0 to 𝑧 = 6 − 3𝑥 − 2𝑦.
Considering the projection D in the 𝑥𝑦 −plane, we find that the
variable 𝑦 ranges from 𝑦 = 0 to 𝑦 = 3 − 32𝑥 (Figure 4), while the
variable 𝑥 runs from 0 to 2.

found for the order 𝑑𝑧 𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑥. (b) The “shadow region” R shown face-on in the 𝑥𝑦 −plane.
Example 4.
Calculate the triple integral ‫𝑦𝑥 𝑈׮‬2𝑧3𝑑𝑥𝑑𝑦𝑑𝑧,
where the region 𝑈 (Figure 5) is bounded by the surfaces
𝑧 = 𝑥𝑦, 𝑦 = 𝑥, 𝑥 = 0, 𝑥 = 1, 𝑧 = 0.

Solution.
The projection of the solid region U onto the xy-plane looks as shown in
Figure 6.
Example 5.
Express the triple integral ‫ 𝑧𝑑𝑦𝑑𝑥𝑑 𝑈׮‬in terms of iterated integrals in
six different ways. The region 𝑈 lies in the first octant and is bounded by
the cylinder 𝑥 2 + 𝑧 2 = 4 and the plane 𝑦 = 3 (Figure 7). Find the value
of the integral.
Example 6
Let 𝜌(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) be the charge density at the point (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) inside an
object 𝑊 bounded by the elliptic paraboloids 𝑦 = 5 − 4𝑥 2 − 𝑧 2
and 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑧 2 /4. Set up the integral giving the total charge
inside 𝑊.
Region bounded by paraboloids demonstrating the shadow method.
The region 𝑊 is bounded by the elliptic paraboloids 𝑦 = 5 − 4𝑥 2 − 𝑧 2
𝑧2
and 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + . If the sun is viewed to be in the direction

of the positive yy-axis, the shadow of 𝑊 in a plane perpendicular to the
𝑧2
𝑦 −axis is the region inside the ellipse 𝑥 2 + = 1.

Example 7
Let 𝑊 be the three-dimesional region bounded by the vertical planes
𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = 1, and 𝑥 = 𝑦 as well as the angled planes 𝑧 = 2 + 𝑥 − 𝑦
and 𝑧 = 𝑥 − 𝑦. Let 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = 𝑥𝑦 and compute the integral
of ff over 𝑊.
Solution: Given that there are three planes parallel to the
𝑧-axis, we'll use the 𝑧 direction as the vertical direction. We'll think of
the sun as coming from that direction and casting a shadow below it.
As shown by the below figure, those three vertical planes cause 𝑊 to
cast a triangular shadow.
Region bounded by planes demonstrating the
shadow method. The region 𝑊 is bounded by
the vertical planes 𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = 1, and 𝑥 = 𝑦 and
the angled planes 𝑧 = 2 + 𝑥 − 𝑦 and 𝑧 = 𝑥 − 𝑦.
If the sun is viewed to be in the direction of the
positive 𝑧 −axis, the resulting shadow on a plane
perpendicular to the 𝑧 −axis is a triangle, as
illustrated by the blue triangle below the region.
