Carlos de Selxas was a virtuoso on the organ and harpsichord, nnd became the lending Portuguese keyboard composer of the early 18th century.
At the age of only 14 he succeeded his father ns organist of Coimbra Cathedral. He moved to Lisbon In l 720 and became organist of the Royal
Chapel, a post he held for the rest of his life.
In the Baroque period, the glga was the Italian version of the gigue - fast and lively, with even quavers in compound time. This giga changes
mood several times from forceful to gentle and back to forceful, as reflected in the dynamics.

Walter Carroll was born in Manchester and played a significant role In the musical life of the city, teaching at the Royal Manchester College of
Music and at Manchester University, and actlng as music adviser to the local education authority. He wrdte many piano pieces for stud ents,
including River and Rainbow, a set of ten miniatures with programmatic titles. ,
The tl1lrd piece from this collection, 'Shadows', ls prefaced by a mono: 'Only the night air, and the dream;/Only the far, sweet-smelling wav:~
It is a night piece, tl1en, describing Carroll's impressions of a place where the river flows into the sea, hence the swaying motion of tile muSIC, No
that the melody lies in the right-hand doned crotchets that sustain the lowest note of the broken chords.

The Hungarian composer Bela Bartok wrote For Children between 1908 and 1910. It was his first large collection of folksong arrangements and
co ntains boch Hungarian and Slovaklon tunes. The composer's aim was to reveal 'the simple and non-Romantic beauties of folk music' to young
pianists. He revised the collection In 1943.
'Dance' is selecced from Volume 2 of the revised version, which is based on Slovakian folk tunes. In this piece, the folk melody is played three
limes (bb. 5, 13 and 23), each time with a dlfferenc chordal accompaniment.
