When we see a dry stretch of land which once used to be a lake or the trees that
previously lined a valley are now barren or the cutting down of almond trees (which
consume a lot of water) we can come to a conclusion that, that area or city is under
a water crisis. Such is the current situation in Quetta. Where the Hanna lake
previously filled with turquoise water is now all dried up. The Balochistan’s
government has declared a state of “water emergency” in Quetta. This state of
emergency was months in the making due to natural factors such as cyclical
droughts and man made conditions such as poor water management, deforestation
and population growth. Currently the underground water resources are depleting at
0.884 meters annually. Many residents had to pay the exuberant prices to water
tanker companies as the companies started to exploit this current state of
emergency. At the time of Eid-ul-Adha people had little but no option than to pay
PKR 5000 for a single tank of water
