LABORATORY SAFETY GUIDELINES

What to Know:
 Perform experiment with teacher’s supervision
 Before your laboratory class, make sure you read the assigned activity and
carefully understand the procedures. Take note of the precautions applied to
that specific experiment. Plan and divide work among your groupmates
 Work on experiments assigned by the teacher one at a time.
 Study carefully the operating instructions of equipment that shall be used by
your group.
 Know the locations and operating instructions of safety equipment such as fire
extinguishers and water source.

What to Wear:
 Always wear your laboratory gown to protect your skin and clothing from both
biological and chemical spillage.
 Wear safety gadgets at all times: Goggles or any other eye protection is a
MUST when working with corrosive chemicals.
 Keep long hair tied back or use hair band or hair net to keep your hair in place.
 Use gloves when handling chemicals and hot objects.
 Use leather and closed shoes rather than canvas and open-toed shoes.

What to Do:
 Clear laboratory seats and tables of all unnecessary books, papers, and other
paraphernalia
 Clean the area before and after experiment.
 Wash your hands with soap and water before and after each experiment.
 Label and store all reagents properly.
 Read carefully the labels on reagent bottles before using them.
 Check the apparatus to make sure it is working properly. Missing or defective
apparatus should be reported to the laboratory personnel immediately.
 Return apparatus in good condition at the end of the experiment.
 Setup the apparatus according to the directions given.
 Always keep combustible or flammable materials away from the light sources.
 Always add acid to water, never water to acid when mixing.
 Report any injuries, even the minor ones, to the teacher immediately.
