COVID-19 is a pandemic disease that is impacting in all countries. However, its intensity is varying from
one country to another that is based on their social and economic infrastructural development along with
the type of political regime in the country.
Unfortunately our daily wage laborer and unorganised sector of the informal economy is very large!
According to some study it could be around 60% of the Economy. It is never measured properly and has
been deliberately neglected by successive Governments. This pandemic has hit them so badly! They lost
their job, no income, no place to stay! Lockdown was announced with just 3 hours time and they could
not leave. Millions of them were on road. With no transport they started walking! This was the greatest
blunder ever by a Government!
Major Problems Faced by Labor Market in India (before covid 19) are Surplus Labour Force, Unskilled
Labour, Lack of Absorption of Skilled Labour, Imperfections, Unemployment.
As this covid 19 came into picture and government start restricts our movements. Here, Lockdown is
merely the start of misery for India’s migrant laborers. India’s coronavirus outbreak, and therefore the
ongoing 21-day lockdown to contain it, has shown a spotlight on the hard lifetime of its seasonal
migrants. Over 80% of the country’s migrant and daily wage population fears that it'll run out of food
before the top of this lockdown.
Now let’s see the share of Indian daily wage workers as compared to their earning:-
Rs 200-400 – 55%
Rs 400-600 – 39%
Below Rs 200 – 2%
From the above data we will analyze that what percentage people are suffering due to this worst
situation. (Covid -19).
While the Indian government has tried to alleviate the pain of the migrants during the pandemic, by
announcing the assistance of Rs1.7 lakh core. But an outsized number of these affected were also
unaware of the government’s schemes meant to ease the Covid-19-led economic crises. Over 60% said
that they had no information about these schemes or the way to access them.
