Construct: Spiritual Intelligence
Purpose: The purpose of the Scale for Spiritual Intelligence is to assess adolescents' spiritual intelligence, which is
defined as the capacity to define one's own meaning and purpose in life. The SSI can be used for research and survey
purposes, as well as for individual assessment and training.

Summary: The Scale for Spiritual Intelligence (SSI; Kumar & Mehta, 2011) is a 20-item, self-report measure of spiritual
intelligence in adolescents. The SSI is rated on a Likert scale and can be completed in 10 minutes. The idea behind the
development of this scale was to generate and assess the concept of spiritual intelligence in the collectivist culture
bounded with eastern philosophy. On the basis of the conceptualization of the construct, 80 items were generated. These
items were given to a panel of expert judges who evaluated them for relevance. The 69 surviving items were then
administered to a sample of tenth-grade students. Item analyses resulted in the final 20-item measure. Internal
consistency was found to be satisfactory. Face and content validity was high as per the judges. Using another sample of
students, factor analysis resulted in a six-factor solution, with all 20 items loading meaningfully. The factors are as follows:
Purpose in life, Human Values, Compassion, Commitment towards Humanity, Understanding Self, and Conscience.
Convergent and discriminant validity was also established through correlations with related measures.

Both Cronbach alpha and split-half reliability were .78.
Validity
Factor analysis yielded six factors: Purpose in life, Human Values, Compassion, Commitment towards
Humanity, Understanding Self, and Conscience. The scale for spiritual intelligence was correlated with self-
compassion scale developed by Raes, Pommier, Neff and Van Gucht (2011) and psychological well being
scale developed by Ryff and Keyes (1995). SI was found to be positively related to Self-Kindness,
Mindfulness, Autonomy, Personal growth, Purpose in life, and self acceptance.
