“Do you think there is really a need to study history in the 21st century?”
Philippines had experienced colonialism. We are colonized by the Spaniards for 333
years, also by the Americans and the Japanese people. Our ancestors experiences how ruthless
those colonizers. For me, those experiences by our ancestors are severe. The history of our
country in terms of colonialism was not good because our ancestors become their slaves but
Philippines has a good history when it comes to politics and governance. The history of the
Philippines is very interesting to study. The history subject in the Philippines was thought in
elementary to tertiary level in different languages. The language used in elementary and
secondary level is Tagalog while in tertiary level is English.
Do you think there is really a need to study history in today’s generation? As a student
nurse of Palawan State University, my opinion is yes, we need to study history even though it is
not related to our course. Why? Simply because history has a direct influence in who we are and
answers the fundamental question why we are the way we are. History does repeat itself and it’s
best to be prepared for it by knowing the outcomes of the past instances and being able to make
wise decisions based on these that will help to a greater decision and outcome in the long run.
I asked my sister and brother about it and their answer are yes also. They said that history
will always be a part of our future. This is also to show credits or recognition to those who
imparted for our liberty and industrial and social growth as a community, a country.
As a Filipino youth of this generation, my only duty and service to our country is to never
forget the lessons of history. They become part of our society. If we want to know where we
came from, we should study history just like if we have no idea what our parents were like
before we were born. We are deprived of some of what makes us “us”. Studying history makes
us understand of what sources or influences shaped us. We should enhance our appreciation of
humankind to our history and also to our heroes that makes our country independent. I’m so
happy that the history subject is included in the curriculum of our course because of that, I am
able to know more about our history.
To my fellow youth, NEVER forget that we are the HOPE of the FUTURE generation as
Dr. Jose P. Rizal said. By respecting our history and studying it, is one way to make the
statement of our National Hero come true.
