Piet Mondrian was a famous abstract artist best known for his grid-based compositions using primary colors separated by black lines. While he began his career painting landscapes, Mondrian's style evolved to focus solely on shapes, colors, and lines. His simplified paintings featuring blocks of red, yellow, blue, and white have become iconic and influenced design. The document also provides instructions for creating an abstract artwork in Mondrian's style using markers or crayons to divide a paper into colored shapes outlined in black lines.

Piet Mondrian is a very famous artist. He might be the most famous
artist whose name is not known by most people. But almost everyone can recognize his work. We’ve all seen his work before. And we’ve seen his work applied to many other items too, like on furniture, and fabrics and wallpaper and appliances. Whenever we see a grid of black lines filled in with red, yellow, blue and white we’re seeing a reference to Piet Mondrian. Mondrian is remembered as being an abstract artist, which means that he didn’t try to paint things in the real world. He was only concerned with things like shapes and colors. But he didn’t start out that way. When he was young he painted landscapes with trees and skies. Slowly his landscapes became more and more abstract until nothing was left but straight lines and blocks of color. So how do we make our own Mondrian painting? Watch the video by GLASSDEZIGNZ if you can. We can use markers or crayons. If you have a ruler, use that too. It will come in handy. But if you don’t, that’s OK. Start by using a black marker or crayon. With the ruler make straight black lines that divide up your paper. Some of the lines can go all the way across the page, but others should stop when they meet other lines that you’ve already drawn. Keep going until you’ve divided the page into a pattern of squares and rectangles. Now, using red, yellow and blue, color in those squares and rectangles. Try not to use the same color in shapes that are next to each other. Also remember to leave some of the shapes white. Mondrian always kept a lot of the shapes white. Keep going until you’re sure that you’ve made a masterpiece.
