Strangers on the train:
Imagine you are two strangers on a train. Try to role play the dialogue below as naturally
as you can a few times. (B is the male in mixed gender groups!)

A: Going far?
B: Brighton. You?
A: Brighton.
B: Traveling?
A: Holiday.
B: Husband?
A: Alone!
B: Coffee?
A: 7 o’clock?
B:Why not?

Say these sentences to each other. Try to say them naturally. Which word(s) carries/carry the
main stress(es)? Why? Which other words are also stressed? Why?

1. Do you fancy a cup of tea?

2. Put that down!

3. I’m a teacher.

4. Where do you live?

5. You couldn’t lend me a fiver, could you?

6. Nice day, isn’t it?

7. I’ve got a pen, a pencil, a notebook and a ruler.

Now say the sentences again. Does your voice rise or fall at the end of these
sentences? (Again, try to say them naturally.)
