Introduction
Orthopedic hospital is a single speciality hospital that exclusively provides
diagnosis and treatment for musculoskeletal system related problems.

Considering the above facts, Hospaccx team participates in

‘Orthopedic Hospital Planning and Designing’. This is macroficial study of
orthopedic hospital planning and designing if you want to get into more
detail you can contact [email protected]

Planning & Designing of

Orthopedic Hospital
Orthopedic OT
Orthopedic OT can be designed as that of regular OT.

Specially designed OT Table is used in Orthopedic OT:

 Orthopedics Operating Table are designed for orthopedics operation
and surgical procedures according to clinical requirements of orthopedic
surgeries.

 The orthopedic table can be equipped with additional attachments

like orthopedic fracture table (Fracture & Lower Limb Traction Unit),
Femur Lateral Attachment, Knee arthroscopy and tibia nailing attachment
and Arm Surgery Table to improve ease of operation and achieve proper
positioning for an orthopedic surgeon.

Emergency Orthopedic Care

 Emergency orthopedic care includes acute trauma care and urgent
general orthopedic care delivered in hospital emergency rooms.
 Hospitals must provide facilities and resources to allow orthopedic
surgeons to provide safe, high quality emergency orthopedic care.

 Orthopedic ICU
In an acute care hospital, the intensive care unit staff must effectively use
specialized equipment, while making split-second decisions pertaining to
the care of a large number of medically fragile patients. Optimizing the
space for efficiency and safety can help drive successful care outcomes
and support a satisfactory experience for patients and families.

 Layout:Adequate space should be provided for the movement of

medical equipment, wheelchairs and furniture. It’s better to create a room
large enough to absorb additional functions as time moves forward can
ensure functionality in the long-term.
 Storage:Space should be provided for storage of devices and
common medical supplies like linens and medications. Often used
supplies should be located near the patient to promote efficiency.
 Lighting:Enough lighting should be provided between the bed and
bathroom to reduce the likelihood of patient falls. Also, sufficient lighting
in the medication prep zone can allow providers to better check patient
arm bands to ensure proper care delivery.
 Family zone layout:Situate family space in the line-of-sight of
providers to facilitate inclusion into the care conversation. Also, position
furniture out of the way of the caregiver zone in an area that allows
visitors to see and hear the TV without disturbing the patient. Furniture
should also be in place to allow visitors to make physical contact with the
patient when desired.
Surgical ICU: Separate space should be provided for SICU. It should be
located nearby to regular orthopedic ICU. The Surgical Intensive Care Unit
(SICU) is the area for critically ill patients who require orthopedic surgery
or are recovering from orthopedic surgery.

Radiology Department
 Facilities for X-Ray & CT must be provided in orthopedic hospital.
 Radiology equipments like X-Ray machine, CT etc. must be installed
in adequately shielded rooms to ensure that public in the vicinity of the x-
ray installations are not unduly exposed to x-ray radiation.
 The adequacy of shielding depends on the material and thickness
used for this purpose. Different materials can be used for shielding.
 However, brick or concrete are considered the best materials, as
they are easily available, economical, and have good structural strength.
 While lead is a suitable shielding option for energies encountered in
diagnostic x-rays, it is a weak structural material with tendency to lose
uniformity and needs periodic radiation survey to ensure its continued
adequacy.
 Also, Lead poses a serious environmental hazard and the use of it is
being discouraged the world over. Recently, many new materials are
being used/ developed as potential shielding materials, as an alternate to
Lead
X-Ray Room Requirements are as follows:
 Room should have preferably one entrance door and window if
present, should be above 2m from the finished floor level outside the x-
ray room.
 Door should have a hydraulic mechanism to ensure that door is
closed during procedure and should be provided with overlapping at the
joints to avoid streaming.
Radiography and Fluoroscopy equipment: Couch, Control console
and chest stand
 In such a way that chest stand is on the opposite wall of the
entrance door and the control console.
 Mobile protective barrier with lead equivalent glass viewing window
should be positioned in such a manner that the operator is completely
shielded during the exposure.
 Control console should be positioned as far away as possible from
the x-ray tube.

Note: Floor (if installation is not on ground floor) & ceiling thickness if 6
inch concrete is adequate.
Computed Tomography: Gantry, Couch, Separate control console room,
viewing window
 Position the gantry and couch such that the patient is completely
visible from the control console, during the scanning
 The entrance door to the gantry room from the control console shall
have similar requirements as the patient entrance door.

Stem Cell Treatment Department:

Sample Collection Room is crucial part of stem cell department.
 An adequate and separate space should be provided for donor
examination and evaluation.
A 24 hour emergency and intensive care medical services should be
provided.
 A designated area for appropriate preparation and storage of the
consumables, reagents and equipments needed for performing the
collection procedure should be provided.
 A laboratory should be provided to perform all the tests required.

Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation

Space should be provided for physiotherapy department on the basis of
an understanding of the activities involved in the functional areas
required for the orthopedic hospital.

Area for Other Treatments

Separate area should be provided for consultation & treatment for Various
Orthopedic Diseases like brain stroke, down syndrome, Parkinson’s
disease, cerebral palsy etc. otherwise consulting area can be provided in
OPD itself.

Conclusion
To conclude, use of orthopedic OT table is mandatory as it provides
additional attachments for orthopedic patients. Also, Physiotherapy &
rehabilitation department plays an important role incase of orthopedic
patients.
