CHEMISTY HOMEWORK DUE MONDAY NOVEMBER 6.

(ANSWER 1 TO 4 ON FOLDER SHEET and 5-7 on here)

1. Chemical Substances can combine in various ways to form mixtures, the components of which can be separated
by various means. What do you understand by the term ‘mixture’?
2. Solutions, suspensions and colloids are examples of mixtures. Explain the difference between these three
mixtures in terms of particle size, sedimentation (will it settle out or not when left to stand) and transmission
(passes or not, how?) of light.
3. Explain how you would separate sodium chloride (salt) from water. You may list the steps like the procedures of
a lab experiment.
4. Explain what happens to the boiling and melting point of water if salt is added to it.
5. Classify the following as colloids, solutions or suspension (HINT USE GOOGLE IF NEEDED  )
A. Mayonnaise _______________ F. White vinegar ____________
B. Smoke _____________ G. Shaving cream __________
C. Air _______________ H. Milk _____________
D. Gelatin ____________ I. Sea water ______________
E. Fog ___________ J. Alloy _________________
6. The separation technique used to separate a mixture of ethanol and water is ______________. This method
separates the ethanol and water based on their _______________________.
7. Label the following statements as True or False
A. ____________ The composition of a pure substance is variable
B. ____________ The density of a pure substance is fixed
C. ____________ the component parts of a mixture cannot be separated by any means
D. ____________ the properties of mixtures are fixed and constant.
E. ____________ The dispersed particles in a colloid are larger than those in a suspension.
F. ____________ Solutions are usually opaque.
G. ____________ If left undisturbed, the dispersed particles in a suspension will not settle.
H. ____________ Light does not pass through a suspension.

CHEMISTRY TEST #2 NOVEMBER 7th
Outline:
You should be able to
- Draw the Classification of matter diagram
- Distinguish between Elements, compounds and
mixtures (by words and by diagrams)
- Distinguish between pure substances and
mixtures (at least 2 differences)
- Distinguish between solution, suspensions and
colloids in terms of particle size, transmission
of light, sedimentation (particles settle or not)
- Distinguish between homogeneous and
homogeneous mixtures.
- Classify some mixtures as colloids, suspension
or solutions (see homework)
- Know all separation methods and what each
method use to separate each mixture (review
table).

HINT! Make sure you review your quiz and be able to answer all questions. Do your
homework to the best of your ability. The Homework is related to the test! Nothing on
solubility will be on the Test.
