Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Spring 2020 classes will be held online
only. All contact hours will be conducted via Zoom.
Final Exam: online proctored (ProctorU possibly) Thursday, June 11, 7:00-10:00 pm
Note: Lecture (CHEM 8B) and Lab (CHEM 8LB) are separate courses.
iLearn: http://iLearn.ucr.edu. The Chem 8B iLearn site is used extensively (and updated
frequently) for course information, announcements, practice exams, video lectures, grades, etc.
Grading: Your grade will be determined from PollEverywhere (100 points), weekly assessments
(250 points), and final exam (150 points). This is pending for approval to conduct a ProctorU
final exam; subject to change if a proctored online final is not possible.
Final grades: The average final grade is typically a B-. Grade scale is listed below. Grades are
not negotiable, special consideration is not given. This is pending for approval to conduct a
ProctorU final exam; subject to change if a proctored online final is not possible.
A: 93% B: 83% C: 73% D: 63% F: < 60%
Exams:
● Final (finals week) - 150 points
Disclaimer About Exams: Organic Chemistry is a cumulative subject by its very nature. Each
exam will focus on new material but will necessarily build upon material tested on previous
exams. You cannot simply neglect material that you learned after each exam. This trend
continues throughout the CHEM 8 sequence. The typical exam score is approximately 60%.
Academic Integrity: Exams and homeworks are individual efforts. Anyone caught cheating on
exams or assignments will be referred to Student Conduct and Academic Integrity and will
receive a zero on the assignment/exam. Please report answer sharing to me if you find it online
(you will not be subject to disciplinary action for reporting it.) Do not use Chegg, CourseHero or
similar websites to share answers.
PollEverywhere: During daily lectures, I will ask questions using PollEverywhere. Correct
answers earn 2 points (out of 2), incorrect answers earn 1 point (out of 2). You can earn up to
100 points maximum via PollEverywhere. I anticipate 2-3 PollEverywhere questions per lecture,
around 75 total questions.
Online Classroom Behavior: Please mute your microphones during Zoom lectures. You need
not turn on your camera during lectures. If you have a question, use the chat function.
Weekly Assignments: Short problem sets will be assigned each week. These will be submitted
as assignments via Gradescope for grading. Each will be worth 25 points each, 250 points
maximum earned. No late submissions will be accepted.
Approximate Class Schedule: The chapters and sections listed below represent a best
estimate of the sequence of the course (and may be subject to change). We will cover Chapters
9, 11 – 17 in CHEM 8B.
The syllabus may be edited to address errors and omissions as necessary.
