    Topic: Panchayati Raj. Time: 45 min.

    General objective: Describe features and functions of the panchayat.

    Specific objective: All the students would be able to orally tell all the features and at least
    6 compulsory functions of panchayat independently.

    Content: 1) Features of the panchayat

    2) Functions of the panchayat

    Targeted skills: Students understands the responsibility of government and responsibilities


    as a citizen.

    Teacher’s aid: 1) Oxford trail grade 6 textbook.


    2) Chart

    Background knowledge: 1) Difference between government and self - government

    2) Meaning of word features.

    Method:
    Introduction: Teacher will ask following questions to the students.

    1) What do you do when you face any problem in school?

    2) Whom do you contact or inform first when you face


    any problem in school?

    3) What do you do when that person is not able to solve


    the problem?
    Features of the Panchayat

    - Head is known as Pradhan or Sarpanch

    - Vice - Sarpanch or vice - pradhan


    Role play activity
    - Organise meetings

    - signs documents

    - Panchayats are elected for 3 to 5 years.


    Features of the Panchayat

    - Compulsory functions:

    1) Constructs and repairs roads,


    bridges, etc.

    2) Health facilities

    3) Clean drinking water

    4) Streets and roads clean.

    5) Vaccination and inoculation

    6) Constructs buildings

    7) Primary education

    Teacher will read the same from textbook


    and show it on chart.
    8) Records births and deaths

    9) Help farmers

    10) Welfare of the weaker section of


    society.

    - Optional functions:

    1) Build playgrounds and rest houses

    2) Organise cattle fairs and village


    markets.
    End: Teacher will ask following questions

    1) Who is the head of the panchayat?

    2) If that person is absent than who takes responsibilities of the panchayat?

    3) Panchayats are elected for how many years?

    4) What work does panchayat do in terms of health?

    5) What work does panchayat do in terms of education?

    6) What are the optional functions of panchayat?

    Assignment: Write down the features and functions of the panchayat in your class work
    book.
