PROCEDURE FOR SHUTTING DOWN OF TURBINE & EQUIPMENTS

CODE: BTPP/TURBINE/006/TURBINE SHUTTING DOWN PROCEDURE

1.0 TURBINE SUTDOWN:

During planned tripping, reduce Load and parameters up to minimum possible firing
in the Boiler (30 to 35%) TGMCR. For the lignite flow of 35 tons, load may be
reduced to minimum 20MW gradually. Inform Generator Board Engineer to avail
Station supply. Ensure that HP/LP bypass system comes to service. If not, open
manually. There after Hand Trip the Turbine. Hand Trip can be done through

1. Emergency Trip Button in DCS. 2. The Push Button in the Control Desk. 3. Push
Button in the Annunciation Window Panel.

During Load reduction, all Heaters to be removed from service one by one
according to the Unit Load at which they were earlier taken into service.

Ensure that the unit has tripped by observing the following:-

 TSLLE output is zero percent (EHTC Page in DCS).

 All turbine Stop Valves and Control Valves had closed and the valves position
feedback are zero mm (EHTC Page in DCS).
 Generator Circuit Breaker ‘OPEN’ indication is available in DCS.
 Load Generated Indicator reads zero MW.
 TG Speed is getting reduced at a steady rate from the rated grid speed.
 Observe HP and LP Bypass Opening and watch for any drop in Condenser
Vacuum.

Note down the maximum vibration during coasting down of the machine.

2.0 TURBINE OIL SYSTEM:

1. Observe starting of Lift Oil Pump at 510 rpm.

2. Obseve opening of Shaft Turning Gear SOV at 210 rpm.

3. Ensure the TG Shaft settles at the STG speed of approximately 65 rpm.

4. STG can be stopped when MMT (Max Metal Temp) drops below100 oC.

3.0 TCV ( OIL TEMP CONTROL VALVE )

o
Ensure Turbine Oil temperature is maintaining at 50 C. If it falls below 40 oC,
manually throttle the DMCW Outlet valve of the Lube Oil Cooler which is in service
and maintain the temperature above 40 oC, until the TG Shaft is brought to rest and
Oil pumps are stopped.

4.0 HP BYPASS

HP Bypass valves can be kept open partially during Forced Cooling of Boiler and LP
Bypass can be kept in service for forced cooling of boiler if Condenser vacuum is
available. If there is no vacuum in the condenser and LPBP valves are in closed
condition, Re heater start up vents can be opened for forced cooling of boiler.

After stopping of Boiler, HPBP has to be kept in continuous service in order to cool
the reheater-1 coil, which is immersed in FBHE-1. Before closing of HPBP valves,
ensure that the Combustor temperature is below 400 oC [Combustor bottom 4 TCs
& middle 4 TCs], and if no further pressure reduction is needed.

5.0 BOILER FEED PUMP

Strictly speaking, BFPs can be stopped only if HP Bypass is in full closed condition
and there is no pressure in the Boiler. However, if the unit is going for a long shut
down, BFP can be stopped provided the Combustor temperature is less than 400 oC
and Drum Metal Temperature difference is within 50 oC. For short shut down it is
better to keep BFP in service till Drum metal temperature cools down to 100 oC.

6.0 LP BYPASS

LP Bypass stop valves & control valves can be closed only if Reheater start up vents
(MS-85, MS-86) is opened to maintain about 1 ksc in Reheater coil to ensure boiler
pressure release process.

7.0 VACUUM KILLING

Condenser vacuum can be killed

1. If MS Pressure is below 20 ksc and HRH Pressure is about 1 ksc with

Reheater start up vents in open condition.
2. HP Bypass opening in minimum to ensure Boiler Pressure release process.
3. Condenser connected drains viz. CRH, HRH line drains, MAL drains, Heater
drip condensate drain lines etc. are in closed condition.
4. All drains connected to Atmospheric Flash Tank (AFT) in opened.
5. LP Bypass closed and Control Oil Pumps (COPs) stopped.

8.0 CONDENSER EXTRACTION PUMP

CEPs can be stopped after ensuring LP Exhaust hood temperature is below 60 oC

and not rising. There should not be water or steam entry into the condenser.

After stopping CEP, isolate the low and high capacity make up lines to hot well so
that Condenser doesn’t get flooded for the shut down unit, whenever Make up
pump is in service for the other unit. Also ensure CEP gland sealing root valve and
valve sealing root valve in Makeup line near make up station at 0 ML Condenser
Rear are in closed condition.

9.0 DEAERATOR

Cold Reheat (CRH) and Auxiliary Steam (AST) sources (CRH-2, AS-2) to Deaerator
may be isolated. Also ensure closing of Extraction Steam Valve (Ex-11). Start up
vent (SM-20) to be kept open. There should not be any pressure and level rise in
the Deaerator. Working level of Deaerator to be monitored.

10.0 Chemical Dozing Pump

The Lab may be informed to stop the Chemical Dozing Pumps, after Shutting down
of the Unit.

11.0 Condenser On load Cleaning System (COLTS)

Before stopping any one of the running CWP, the Ball collection may be carried out
and Ball Recirculation Pumps may be stopped.

After shutting down of the Turbine, the following parameters are to be
observed:

1. Maximum Metal Temperature (MMT) of HP/IP Turbine

2. LP Exhaust hood temperature
3. Turbine Expansion readings
4. Turbine Speed (65rpm)
5. MOT, Howell , Deaerator and HP Bypass OSU levels
6. Healthiness of the running equipments such as Oil Pumps, Oil Vapour
Extraction Fan, Hydraulic Turning Gear etc.
7. Shut down readings are to be recorded for every one hour after shutdown.
8. After 48 hours of shutdown, readings may be recorded for every 2 hours till
MMT reaches 1200C.

NOTE 1:

The following pumps may be kept in service for IAC, SAC and Ash handling
system compressors.

1 .DMCW pump

2. DMCW booster pump

3. ACW pump

4. Hot well make up pump.

5. Circulating water pump.

These pumps are to be stopped only after getting clearance from Shift
Engineer/UCB in charge.

NOTE 2:

1. STG and Lift oil pump may be stopped when MMT comes down to 1000C.
2. Oil pump may be stopped when MMT comes down to 1000C.
