Manual

Name Hafiz Abdul Manan

Reg # 2015-EE-445

EXPERIMENT # 7
Single Phase DC/AC Converters
Equipment

 Lucas Nulle Interface and Experimenters connected to a PC with Labsoft

 Lucas Nulle Power Electronics 2 set of cards
 Connecting wires for Lucas Nulle Equipment

Controlled Rectification with Resistive Load

Set up the circuit of a single phase inverter on Lucas Nulle equipment. A schematic diagram
of the rectifier system is shown in Fig. 1. The Lucas Nulle equipment picture for such a
system is presented in Fig. 2.

For details of connections and settings, refer to ‘Measurements on Fundamental Frequency

Control’ section in AC Converter portion of Power Electronics 2, in Labsoft. Run the setup
and observe Load Voltage waveform and copy it in the space below.

Furthermore, observe the waveform of load current on a standard oscilloscope and paste a
snapshot below.

Now go to Instruments PWM and bring out AC PWM controller.

Set amplitude 40% and frequency at 50Hz. Power on the virtual instrument and observe the
voltage wave across load on a standard lab oscilloscope. Attach snapshot below.

Simulation:
Now simulate a single phase full bridge converter (with the anti-parallel didoes) in
MATLAB. Use Vin = 20V, resistive load of 1 ohms. First use it in square wave mode. Attach
figure and waveform below.

Then operate the same circuit via PWM. Generate a triangular wave (1kHz) and compare it
with a sine wave to produce the PWM. Attach snapshot of the load voltage waveform for one
cycle below.

Change the load to a highly inductive load (with R = 1 ohm and X L = 0.1 ohm) and attach the
snapshot of current for one cycle.

Perform FFT analysis of the load voltage and attach harmonic spectrum below.

Write a detailed note on what you have learnt/verified in this lab exercise.

I have learnt that:

1. inverter it produces more distortion in the current than the real ones.

2. It was cleared to understand the invereters.
