Video title: Making students feel safe

https://youtu.be/iydalwamBtg

This video is the most interesting video to watch as it emphasizes social and emotional learning and

trauma informed practices as a path to improve students’ academic outcomes. According to the teachers,

the most important thing in school when dealing with students is making sure the place is safe, whether

it’s their fellow students, teachers, or even the staff members. One important thing I have learned from

the video is that when the teachers pull students in smaller groups, it helps the students to feel safer, and

also sitting with them in class make them comfortable to ask any question they might have. Students who

do not feel safe try to disengage. Teachers need to give their students an opportunity to share what they

know as a feedback because that’s the only way the teacher will know how they understand. Miss

Madisien steele talks about different types of trauma practices that they practice at school to help the

students. She also said that one of the most successful things is building the positive school culture in the

environment where everyone feels empowered to be successful. I also loved to see the check-in and

check-out with the teacher that way the students are able to focus on their daily goals.

The author (video) was recorded by Trevor Boffone and his students.

The three open ended questions are:

1. Knowledge- what are the main concern for students who don’t feel safe in class?

2. Comprehension- how would you make sure that the students are getting enough support from

their teachers?

3. Application- if you had students who are frustrated or can’t keep calmed in class, how would

you handle the situation?

Video #2 A daily support system for students.

https://youtu.be/MyPUY38blZQ?t
In this video, students are getting the support to help them focus on their goal. The check-in and

checkout are where the students meet with a support teacher to make sure the students are on top

their goal each day. The check-in check-out helps to create a good relationship between a student

and a mentor. Teachers or trained professional help to identify the students who need more

support and those who are struggling to meet their requirements on educational level, but more

social and emotional as well. The mentors create goal sheet for students based on their needs and

it has to be agreed by their classroom teacher. The goal is set according to what subjects the

students is Struggling with. I think this is a great idea because it also helps the students stay

motivated and be productive.

The author (the video was recorded by principal Mathew Portell and the students)

The three open ended questions are-

Knowledge- State other ways you can show support to students who are failing their tests.?

Synthesis- How would you make sure your students are prepared for their test?

Evaluation- According to the video, how to teaches assess their students in need?

Video #3 The sensory room. Helping students with autism focus and learn.

https://youtu.be/T9j6rQ4rtQY
The sensory room is a room that helps the students with autism focus and learn better. The star

autism program provides an opportunity for Autistic students by offering support system that

help meet the needs of the students. Their special education teacher says sensory room is the

most important part of the day for those kids because the sensory room helps them focus better

and be able to retain the information. A physical education teacher who works with some

students talks about the behaviors that are demonstrated by students because they are not able to

communicate their need. She also says that the students need sensory breaks throughout the day

so that the students can self-regulate their emotion. I really like the idea of the sensory room and

I think every school should have the same thing because sometimes students need an outlet, and

this could help them calm down.

The three open ended questions are-

1. Comprehension- discuss how students with special need would benefits from sensory

rooms?

2. Analysis-how would you compare students with autism behavior with a normal student

and how these behaviors can be dealt with?

3. Application- as a teacher would you be able to apply the knowledge you gained from

watching the video to your new school.

Video #4 Transitioning to Trauma-Informed Practices to Support Learning

https://youtu.be/iydalwamBtg

In this video, the principal Mathew portell is a stepping up to help in transitioning practices to

make sure the students will ok. The school have implemented social and emotional running

curriculum to help create a better one on one relationship with students. The program is also

geared for teachers to ensure they are able to provide safe environments for all students. The

school encourage hiring more trained professional who understands the students needs and

someone the students can relate and feel safe to communicate with them. I love the leader in me

curriculum program because it teaches the students leadership and life skill they need.

The three open ended questions are:

1. Knowledge- can you tell us what you think about the programs offered in this school?

2. Synthesis- How are the teachers able to organize these programs and make sure they

are effective to the students?

3. Evaluation- What is the estimated number of students expected to join these programs?
Video #5 Creating safe space Reflection

https://youtu.be/dxBv1w4SQyw

In this video, it talks about how giving student time and space to deal with their emotions is good

for students because it helps them to stay focused. In most cases students come in class with a lot

of issues, it could be anger or maybe they are dealing with issues at home which would make

students act out in class. The school have implemented a peace corner to help the student calm

down. The peace corner has some toys and pillows for students to use as a way of calming

themselves. There are also some charts provided by the teachers at the peace corner which

students are supposed to fill out how they feel and what they need to do to reduce the behavior.

This is a great idea and I think all schools should provide corners like this for students who need

break for their breakdowns.

The three open ended questions are:

1. Application-how are the instruction in this classes illustrated to students so they can

understand?

2. Comprehension-How can you identify the problems that are caused by students anger in

class?

3. Analysis- based on the information or the practiced used in class to help them calm

down, do you think these practices are effective?

Video #6. 5 keys to social and emotional learning success.

https://youtu.be/DqNn9qWoO1M

In this video it talks about the important of social and emotional learning success among the

students. This helps the students reduce their emotion content so they can be open to the new

materials. The five social and emotional learning mentioned are:

 Social awareness

 Self-management

 Self-awareness

 Relationship skills

 Responsible decision making.

According to the Studies shows that sustained and well-integrated social and emotional

learning (SEL) programs can help schools engage their students and improve

achievement. Self-awareness id one of the hardest for the young people according to

their teacher. This also helps the students to deal with anger in a less stressful way.

The three open ended questions are-

1. Knowledge- The video has listed some of social and emotional learned that could help

the students. How would you use your knowledge to teach your students?

2. Application- what are the important message you would use or apply to your school to

help your students with their behaviors?

3. Compare and contract how these practices may affect students if not properly practiced.
