Introduction to Aromatic Hydrocarbons

The aromatic hydrocarbons are the hydrocarbons which contains at least one aromatic ring
system which resembles in chemical properties with benzene ring. The parent member of the
family is benzene ring having molecular formula C6H6. The aromatic compound may be
single aromatic ring , double or multiple ring system. All the aromatic compounds follows
Huckel’s rules. The some of the aromatic systems are shown belolw -

Structure and Orbital diagram of benzene :

Benzene is the parent member of the aromatic family having molecular formula C 6H6.
Kekule has proposed that benzene is the cyclic molecule having six carbon atoms situated
at the six corners of the hexagon. It has three alternate double bonds .The π – bonds present
in the benzene ring delocalized to over all the carbon atoms and hence the Pi elelctron
cloud is spreaded over the all carbon atoms. Kekule also has suggested that , benzene take
part in resonance ie delocalization of pi- electron cloud to give two canonical forms which
are equivalent to the resonance hybrid.

Resonance forms Resonance Hybrid

The resonanace structure of the benzene is supported by the following facts :

 All the C-C bond having same bond length 139 pm which is intermediate between
the C-C (154 pm) and C=C (134 pm ).
 Due to the delocalization the energy of the resonance hybrid decreases as compared
to the structres I and II to about 50KJ/mole. This decrease in the energy is called as
Resonance energy. Hence this provide more stability to benzene ring.
 It is expected that ,due to presence of double bonds it would give addition reactions
but actually it gives only substitution reactions.
